Question ID: 46833
We just set up a free web page address of:
flemingsfurniture.home.attbi.com as a part of our ATT&T Broadband
package. It can be accessed that way but not if one types www before
it. We want to put the address on a business card and don't know how
to proceed. Is there something extra one has to do to have a www.
address? In Google it will come up after typing the above address,
but not any other way. Thanks for your help!

Hi Pinnochio-ga,

I have bad news and a possible solution.

First, the bad news. According to the FAQ at
http://home.attbi.com/pwpaddresses.html#vanityurl
your free Personal Web Page can only be accessed the following ways:

1) Through http://home.attbi.com/~flemingsfurniture
2) Through, as you already know,
http://flemingsfurniture.home.attbi.com

Unfortunately, "free" often entails some restrictions, in this case,
the fact that your free page is under a "home" subdomain under the
main attbi.com domain.

Okay, now (partially) good news. The "partially" comes from the fact
that you'll have to spend some money. If you want to use the common
www address, you can register a domain name, and then utilize what's
called a "domain redirection", "domain forwarding," or "URL
forwarding" service.

My first thought was to suggest that you register
"flemingsfurniture.com." But unfortunately another Flemings Furniture
already has taken that domain, as you may already know. However ...

FLEMINGSFURNITURE.NET
FLEMINGSFURNITURE.ORG
FLEMINGSFURNITURE.INFO
FLEMINGSFURNITURE.BIZ
FLEMINGSFURNITURE.US

... are all available as of right now. As an example, you registered
the domain, FLEMINGSFURNITURE.BIZ, which I think has a certain ring to
it. You purchase a plan from a registration/hosting site that includes
domain forwarding. When a visitor typed in
http://www.flemingsfurniture.biz they would be sent to your
home.attbi.com address.

As noted by Chris below, there are a slew of URL redirection services.
I'd suggest taking your time, finding a registration service that
provides free URL redirection, and go from there. As a starting
point, try this Google search ...

And without belaboring the obvious, I should point out that if you're
going to take the route of paying money for your own domain, you
should consider simply taking your site to another hosting service
that will provide a turnkey solution. Many hosting services offer
software simmiar -- or better than -- provideded by attbi.com. My
personal favorite registrar/host site is GoDaddy, at
http://www.godaddy.com/, but again, there's a slew of others offering
similar services.

Best of luck with your site

I agree that the URL is quite ugly...
I have a website (www.bsatroop153.org), a domain that I purchased
redirect to http://tman45.dyndns.org:81. You can check to see if you
can purchase a domain name from AT&T. If not, check out
://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&q=cheap+domain+names.
Most services offer what they call a URL redirector, which would point
www.flemingsfurniture.com to the company that u purchased the domain
from's server, and from there to your site
(http://flemingsfurniture.home.attbi.com. It cost me $10 per year,
but well worth it. However, do get indexed by search engines, only
your home page will be indexed from www.flemingsfurniture.com, but you
can submit the other URL and search engines will index all pages. No
matter what you do, most search enginges take 1-4months to index any
site...Add your site to as many directorys that you can on the net, to
speed up time a little bit. Sorry for this being so messy, so if you
need something clarified, let me know.
