Hello.

Approximately 171 million automobiles are insured in the United States.

From a 2003/2004 report by the Ohio Insurance Institute:

"According to the Automobile Insurance Plans Service Office (AIPSO),
about 2.5 million of the over 171 million insured private passenger
cars in the US were insured through the involuntary market in 2001
about 1.45%."

An insurance company press release from a few years ago has a slightly
lower estimate (168 million):

"We're attracted to the U.S. personal auto insurance market because of its huge
size -- 168 million insured vehicles -- and because almost everybody's policy
renews every six months. "

----------
search strategy:
"million insured" autos
"million insured" vehicles

I hope this helps.

Another statistic:

"In 2002 (latest data available), 169 million vehicles were insured in
the United States, excluding Texas. "

Juggler,
Thanks. If I read the answer correctly, it defines the approximately
170 million insureds as personal auto lines, and does not include the
commercially licensed, fleet vehicles that range from Local delivery
vans, local utility trucks, state vehicles, over the road semis,
UPS/FedEX, etc. Would you please be so kind as to provide a
comprehensive answer to the question. I expect that the number is over
200 million, just as a guestimate, but I'll be patient for your reply
and thank you in advance. Positive results yield a positive rating and
increase to five stars. Thanks, kindly.
Have a great weekend.

Well, there are an estimated 83 million commercial vehicles. I think
it's fair to assume that virtually all of them are insured, so you can
add that on to your total.

"83 million commercial vehicles are in service in the US"
