Hello,
 I moved from SF to NYC. I have a typo in name on my CA DL and
NY DMV refuses to issues me a NY licence saying that I have to
go back to CA and fix the spelling there. All my other documents 
are fine, without typo. Is there a way to get it fixed in NYC, 
without going back to CA just for this reason?

I don't see why you can't call the headquarters of the CA DMV and send
them in all the paperwork and have them take care of it and mail you a
new one.
