Hello,

This is a simple series of questions that I hope someone with enough
experience or background can provide an answer to.

1) Does New York City NYPD use a digital or analog radio system?
2) For whichever it uses, what sort of a "police" radio scanner can I
buy? Any specific details or features to look for?
3) Can I be provided with the list of the frequencies of most groups
and departments in New York City that can be used with a radio
scanner?

Thank you

For reasons of national security, I urge that this NOT be answered.

Nelson, this is public information that is widely available. Radio
Shack even sells a directory of all frequencies registered in an area
and who is using them. There are also many web sites that provide
this easily attainable information.

nelson,

What national security is this?

There are hundreds and perhaps thousands of sites, usegroups and
individuals who are involved in this sort of ordeal LEGALLY and there
are no laws against this.

Please differentiate between something that is harmfull against a harmless hobby.

Thank you

I'm not quite sure of the legal situation in NY, but here in the UK
it's not illegal to share frequencies or indeed discuss who uses them,
but using this information and listening in on the authorities is
against the law.

Analog

Pretty much anything over 200 dollars is a decent police scanner
that'll cover it. You can go to radio shack. You can also buy a ham
radio that does a better job. Best way is to figure out what you want
to listen to and find a radio that listens to that frequency. Because
radio's do not cover ALL frequencies. This link is of a NICE radio
that covers ALOT.

" Yaseu VX-7RB "

You'll be able to listen to the police and much much more with this one.

3) Can I be provided with the list of the frequencies of most groups
and departments in New York City that can be used with a radio
scanner?

I believe that link will more than answer your question.
