The National Conventions you're talking about are held in presidential election years, where the nominees for President and Vice President are selected. Newt Gingrich became Speaker of the House following the 1994 elections. The convention speech you're referencing happened in 1996, where Senator Bob Dole of Kansas was chosen as the Republican presidential nominee, and where Jack Kemp of California was ratified as the Vice Presidential nominee. I recall the speech but I'm pretty sure it wasn't in prime time...Gingrich had become a liability to the party by 1996. |
