I am looking for the speaker, it may have been Newt Gingrich, Tom
Delay or Trent Lott, who at the 1991 Republican National Convention,
or possibly the 1995 RNC, said in a speech something to the effect of
'..if unions controlled candle making we wouldn't have light bulbs...'

I am looking for the speaker, it may have been Newt Gingrich, Tom
Delay or Trent Lott, who at the 1992 Republican National Convention,
or more likely, the 1996 RNC, said in a speech something to the effect of
'..if unions controlled candle making we wouldn't have light bulbs...'

I am hoping to write the speaker and using his own quote to urge him
to support solar energy for a myriad of beneficial reasons.

PS Thanks to arizonaphoenix-ga for confirming and giving a lead to
the occurance of this speach.

The National Conventions you're talking about are held in presidential
election years, where the nominees for President and Vice President
are selected.

Newt Gingrich became Speaker of the House following the 1994
elections. The convention speech you're referencing happened in 1996,
where Senator Bob Dole of Kansas was chosen as the Republican
presidential nominee, and where Jack Kemp of California was ratified
as the Vice Presidential nominee. I recall the speech but I'm pretty
sure it wasn't in prime time...Gingrich had become a liability to the
party by 1996.
