According to the 2003 statistics of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU, a specialized agency of the United Nations)), there are 2 464 962 600 telephone lines in the world, corresponding to 40.32 phone subscription per 100 people. Detailed figures are avilable at http://www.itu.int/ITU-D/ict/statistics/. The information is based on official data from 183 ogf the world's 193 countries.
