Question ID: 469239
I want to erase Freecell.exe from my Windows 2000 machine, but if I
delete it, it magically shows back up again. How can I erase it for
good?

It is in Winnt/system32. I tried deleting it and then emptying the
recycle bin, and also deleting it from the command line using "del".
In either case, it deleted it - but then it showed back up about three
seconds later.

go into my computer.
Right click on your c drive, go to properties.
there will be a tab called "more options", left click on it.
now there will be a button under the header of "windows components"
double click on accessories. A new window will pop open.
Uncheck games.
click ok.
click next.
It may ask for your windows cd to be inserted.

You must delete the file from 2 locations:

Winnt\system32\dllcache\freecell.exe
&
Winnt\system32\freecell.exe

The dllcache folder is a hidden system folder.

When ever you delete the file just from system32 windows does a "Self
healing" to repair itself. If you delete the file from dllcache
first, the system will be unable to restore it.

Try this ...You can "uninstall" it by modifing the sysoc.inf
file...then it will appear on your add/remove list in the control
panel.

In the %SystemRoot%\Inf folder on the system volume, use a text editor
(such as Notepad) to open the Sysoc.inf file.
2. Locate the "old base components" line.
3. For each component you want to appear in the Add/Remove Programs
tool, remove the "Hide" comment. For example, change
Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,HIDE,7
to:
Games=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,games.inf,,7
4. Also remove the "HIDE" option from the "AccessUtil=" line. If you
leave this option hidden, then none of the other components in the
"old base components" section are available in Add/Remove Programs.
5. Save and then close the file.
