charlotteboy,
An article published in the Silcon Valley/ San Jose Business Journal
on March 11, 2003 provides some relevant statistics.
For example:
4,854 Internet companies have been acquired or shut down since the end
of the dot-com boom
3,892 Internet properties have been acquired and at least 962
substantial Internet companies have shut down or declared bankruptcy.
"While it has been notoriously difficult to obtain reliable numbers as
to the total number of Internet companies, our best estimates,
compiled from industry sources, tells us that near the beginning of
the decade there were between 7,000 and 10,000 Internet-related
companies that had received formal funding,"

According to the publication ?Wall Street - Driven by Optimal
Rationality or Irrational Exuberance?? by the Swiss Consulting Group,
around 12,000 new dotcoms were created between 1996 and 2000.

Do these figures meet your needs or would you require additional information?
Thanks,
