Dear backup_guru,

I did not locate ISP Rankings in India; however there is a 19 page
report available that might interest you. This price of this report is
US$40.00
Documents are supplied in Adobe PDF format.
The last update of this report was in November 2004.

It states that despite the considerable popular interest in Internet
in India, the ISP market has been in disarray. According to the
telecom regulator, there were 189 operational ISPs in the country,
after a period of market rationalisation. Despite the large number of
providers, 10% of the ISPs have 90% of the subscribers.

This report looks at the ISPs and other aspects of India?s Internet
market. There is also some information on Internet content and
e-services.

Here is part of the table of contents that is relevant to your question.

- ISP market
- Major ISPs

11 major ISPs are listed

Tables provided:
Internet subscriber and user growth ? 1995 - 2004
Internet host computers ? 1995 - 2003
Top 10 Internet Service Providers ? June 2004
Commercial value of e-commerce sector ? 2000, 2005

Please let me know via the clarification feature if this report would
be of your interest.

Thanks,
Bobbie7

if the report provides concrete numbers for the number of subscribers
that each of the ISPs has - and it has it for the top 10 ISPs - then
this will meet our purpose.

Can you find out if it has those two things?

Hello there,

In addition to the source uncovered by my good colleague, bobbie7-ga,
I managed to find a recent report from the Indian government that is
available for free, and that details the market share of the Top 7
ISP's in India which together account for 89% of the customer base.

For instance, the report notes that the largest ISP is the
government-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd., with a bit more than 28%
of the market share.

Should I post a link to that report as an answer to your question?

Let me know.

P.S. I hadn't seen your clarification until after I posted my last
note. The reported I cited also contains subscriber base numbers.
BSNL, for instance, has a subscriber base of 1.49 million customers.

Since you asked bobbie7-ga to post an answer to this question, I am
unlocking it so that she can respond.

I don't know if the report that I found provides subscriber numbers.
Since Pafalafa-ga's report is free and it does provide the number of
subscribers for the top ISPs, his answer would be much more
appropriate.

Best regards,

Hello again,

Actually, I misspoke in my earlier comment. The report I found
details the top 7 ISPs in its summary section, but the full tables in
the report actually provide the customer base for all 188 ISP's in
operation in India.

The report is the most recent quarterly "Performance Indicators"
report from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, and is dated
December 2004:

http://www.trai.gov.in/indicator17dec.pdf

Chatper 3 discusses internet use, and Section 3.3 of the report on
page 14 details the Top 5 ISPs:

The market share of top 5 ISPs is as under:

ISPs..................................Market Share

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. ...............28.08%

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd. ...............18.52%

Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd. ..........17.20%

Sify Ltd.................................13.63%

Data Infosys .............................4.24%

A more detailed table can be found later in the report (Table 3.1, page 29):

"Subscribers Base of Internet Services"

which includes all 188 ISPs in the country. The first ten listed are:

1 Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd.............1494037 subscribers

2 Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd..............985242

3 Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd.........915269

4 Sify Ltd..............................725038

5 Data Infosys..........................225621

6 Reliance Comm. Infrastructure Ltd.....209060

7 Tata Internet Services Ltd............179477

8 Bharti Infotel Ltd.....................80937

9 HCL Infinet Ltd........................46862

10 Shyam Internet Service Pvt. Ltd.......41164

==========

In addition to the above report, available at no charge, there are
commercial reports available for sale such as this one:

http://www.budde.com.au/Reports/Contents/India-Internet-and-E-Services-2084.html
India - Internet and E-Services

which can be purchased on-line for $40.00.

I trust this information fully meets your needs.

However, before rating this answer, please let me know if you require
any additional information. Just post a Request for Clarification,
and I'm at your service.

Cheers,
