PCMechanic, located at http://www.pcmech.com, provides an excellent
tutorial on how to build your own PC. I have taken the following list
of components from their web site "STEP 1: Purchase/Collect The
Components" PCMechanic http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/step/1/

A case for the computer to hold the components.

A motherboard.

A processor.

A cooling fan or other cooling system if the processor does not come with one.

Memory.

A video card.

Removable storage of some kind, which could be a floppy drive, a CD
burner, or a CD/DVD burner.

A hard drive.

A sound card.

A CD-ROM or DVD read-only drive (only necessary if you do not have the
appropriate burner).

A keyboard & mouse.

Drive cables.

Audio cable.

Screws to attach the components to the case.

A system disk to install the operating system.

A display.

It is important to note that there are many manufacturers and types of
most of these components, so a great deal of research needs to be done
to identify which components will work well together and meet your
needs.

Sincerely,

Wonko

As it seems you may be new to the world of home built pc's as such I
found you a quick link describing the process of putting one together.
If you are new and worried about certain facts I would reccomend a
bares bones pc as you can find one that will fit your needs for a good
price. A barebones pc is useually but not always the tower, power
supply, mother board and sometimes the cpu "proccesor" and ram.

Some examples of bare bones systems.

to add to an answered question seems pointless, however just a note to
say 'get the computer shop to set the motherboard jumpers for you' it
makes it all nice and easy then...
