Recently my IBM Thinkpad A21p running Windows 2000 developed a blue
screen problem. At the same time the machine stopped going into
standby mode reporting that, "The device driver for the 'Standard
101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard' device is preventing
the machine from entering standby."

The blue screen problem occurs when I inadvertently press the Function
and Shift keys - which happens fairly often unfortunately. The blue
screen is immediate... ftn-shift and you're dead.

The blue screen error that is reported is INTERNAL_POWER_ERROR.

Dear delos-ga:

Thank you for your question. MSKB article Q257199 addresses this
issue:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q257199

"Symptoms
When you are using a Windows 2000-based computer and the computer
attempts to enter hibernate or standby, you may receive the following
error message:
The device driver for the 'PC/AT Enhanced PS/2
Keyboard(101/102-Key)'device is preventing the machine from entering
hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. If the
problem persists, you may need to update this driver."

Also see:

"When you attempt to put your Windows 2000 computer into Hibernate or
Standby mode, you receive:

The device driver for the 'PC/AT Enhanced PS/2
Keyboard(101/102-Key)'device is preventing the machine from entering
hibernation. Please close all applications and try again. If the
problem persists, you may need to update this driver.

Some 3rd party program has installed a kernel mode device driver that
attaches to the I8042prt.sys keyboard driver, and it is NOT compatible
with Windows 2000.

Some possibilities are:

Pgpdisk 6.02 (which installs the Pgpmemlock.sys and
Pgpdisk.sys drivers).

Adobe Type Manager 4.0 (which installs the Atmhelpr.sys
driver).

The only solution is to uninstall the program and contact the
developer for a compatible update."

Also, if the above did not work for you, and you have recently
installed the latest Windows Media Player, try uninstalling the
CD-Writer plugin in WMP. That also gives you this same error message.

"The adaptec CDRW plug in for the Windows Media has some fluke in
it... if you have regular CD-ROM... somehow it doesn't recognize this
and hangs up the system."

If this doesn't work, then try uninstalling the MS Natural Keyboard
driver, and instead use the standard including with Windows 2000.

I hope this helps!

Sorry, the last sentence should read:

If this doesn't work, then try uninstalling the MS Natural Keyboard
driver, and instead use the standard keyboard driver included with Windows 2000.
