Question ID: 47074
I need to SAVE (export) my history list to a text file. Where is the
Internet Explorer history file or files? When I copy the history to
another computer I see the second computer's history. How on Earth do
I save a computer's history list?! It appears these are not "normal"
files, but special Windows Links that I cannot manipulate normally.
(Please note that my history list is NOT the same as my Favorites
list. Favorites would be easy)

Would you provide the version information of your Operating System and
Internet Explorer program?

Clarification of Question by ptturtle-ga on 30 Jul 2002 16:18 PDT
The computer I need to do this on is running Windows-ME. I do not know
the version of IE, but we can assume it is a very recent one (if this
is essential information I can find out).

You can find version information of IE by opening in then choose

Dear ptturrtle:

Thank you for your question. Although there is no way of exporting and
importing your IE history from one browser to another, there is a
program that will automatically generate a HTML file with your IE 5.0
+ history. You can get that here:

http://www.netlaputa.ne.jp/~mozart/soft/hist2htmlv2.zip

It is a free program, and I have tested in on the latest version of
IE, and it does work.

Google Search Strategy:

export "internet explorer" OR IE history
       ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&safe=off&scoring=d&q=export+%22internet+explorer%22+OR+IE+history&sa=N&tab=gw

I hope this helps!

Best Regards,
blader-ga

What is the 'ettiquette' here?
Secret901-ga "posted a comment" first that led me to the program
'spider' which does exactly what I want. It's perfect.
blader-ga "answered" my question later with a program that, while
good, isn't exactly what I needed because it only saves the history of
one user (the current user).
But blader-ga is listed as the answerer...

Dear ptturtle:

I think I owe an apology to both you and Secret901. I honestly didn't
think that the Spider program answered the question, as I thought it
was some sort of web spider program that cached web pages. I should
have downloaded and tested the Spider program first, but I just
assumed that the program wasn't what you were looking for, since
Secret901 did not post it as an answer nor as a request for
clarification. I assumed that he gave up on this question.

For my answer, I started from scratch and attempted to find a program
that fit for needs. It never crossed my mind that I was "stealing"
this question from another researcher. For the program I have
provided, you can relogon as another user, and it should work, but you
probably already know that.

Please don't think lowly of me because of this honest mistake. Since
you have found Secret901's comment more helpful, and since he is also
a researcher, I would suggest that you reject my answer for a refund
and repost this question for Secret901 so that he may receive the
rightly deserved payment.

Best Regards,
blader-ga

The second link was EXCELLENT. The program 'spider' works like a
charm. The first link makes me laugh. It is a Microsoft Support Rep
telling someone the WRONG information!

OK, blader-ga, I will do that. Don't feel bad, I know it was an honest
mistake. I don't think you did anything wrong. And I thank you both
for helping me!

secret901-ga, I am going to reject this question, and repost it for
you to answer to get the credit.

Thanks again, both of you! Google Answers is great!

Hi ptturtle,

I noticed that you were confused by the fact that, though secret901
posted a comment that ended up answering your question, blader is
listed as your answerer.

I can't speak for secret901, but the typical fashion among Researchers
who are investigating questions is to only post an answer they are
sure of. If a Researcher finds something they think might be close,
but isn't enough (in their opinion) to constitute an answer, they post
it as a comment, so the customer will have information in addition to
the actual Answer.

I know for certain that blader does this, as do most of the other
Researchers of my acquaintance, and I do the same myself. We want our
customers to be well taken care of, and work hard to provide only
complete Answers - we also want our customers to have access to has
much information as possible, and so will post our findings as
comments if we feel we haven't found enough to justify accepting
payment.

In the future, if you should find that a comment has fully answered
your question before an official Answer is posted, you can do one of
two things:

1) If the commenter is a Researcher (not all are) and you'd like to
ensure that that commenter be paid for his or her work, you may ask,
via clarification request, that the Researcher post his or her comment
as an Answer.

2) You may close the question, and pay only the 50 cent listing fee.

No one was trying to step on toes here, just trying to make sure our
customer was well taken care of! I hope I've been able to clear up
the confusion!

Hello:
I worked for about an hour on your question, looking through Newsgroup
messages relating to this topic. The Microsoft Link was not very
helpful to me since my Windows version was XP, so I can't verify it.
I tested the Spider program, another referral from a Usenet message,
but can not verify whether it works on Windows ME.
I know I should have posted this as a clarification request, but since
blader worked on it as well, we can split the money between us?

secret901

Secret901:

I don't think it's possible to "split it." =) Go ahead and take it
once it gets reposted, no one's begrudging you the $10. =P
