Question ID: 47090
Where can I find an interior designer in San Francisco who is also a
feng shui master (formally trained in feng shui) and has experience
working with colors and asian/zen/japanese design? If there is no such
person, I would be happy to find a feng shui trained interior designer
with actual work in japanese/zen design, and separately, to find a
color consultant. Looking for individuals with proven track record and
solid credentials in these areas. To receive payment of $25, please be
sure to meet these criteria - I would pay $10 for an "unqualified"
list of individuals who "may" meet these criteria.

Just to clarify - I'd like to find someone with established
credentials in interior design (not a hobby type design person), and
who has been specifically trained in zen/japanese design, and done
work in that area, and also has had formal training in feng shui and
working with colors. Also, this person need to be someone who does
residential projects.

I'd be happy to increase the payment to $50 for someone who is a
perfect match on these criteria, $25 for a close match, and $10 for
unqualified prospects.

Thanks!

I've found three people who appear to fall into your category of close
matches, though perhaps I am under- or over-rating them. You can
judge for yourself:

"About Gunda Vitols"
Feng Shui 2 Go

"Meet Christina Jantzen"

"Feng Shui and Chinese Philosophy with Edgar Sung, Ph.D."

If at least one fits your needs, I'll be happy to post the relevant
information as an answer. If not, that's okay too.

I made a slight mistake on the third link: it's "Chinese Astrology",
not "Chinese Philosophy".

Clarification of Question by mitchmu-ga on 01 Aug 2002 16:26 PDT
Hi,

All of these people look fantastic. I don't think they're perfect
matches, because, ideally I was looking for someone with professional
credentials in interior design, and who had demonstrated work in
designing japanese or zen style interiors.

Specifically, it looks like Gunda has great Feng Shui training, but
not much formal training in design. Christina looks like she's done a
lot of commercial interior work, but I don't see any formal training
in design either, and it doesn't look like her residental practice is
very developed (I don't see any specifics about work she's done for
homes) however her Feng Shui training looks good. Edgar, also, looks
like he's got great Feng Shui background, but not much in the design
area.

So, I'd say all of these matches are strong on the Feng Shui, but not
so strong on residential design of asian-inspired interiors. I don't
think these are the "perfect" matches I envisioned, but, they're not
unqualified either, somewhere in between.

If you can look some more for people just like these, but who also
have an established practice creating asian type interiors for homes,
that would be really wonderful. I think all of these people look like
they could give me a great feng shui consultation, but I might still
need help with the asian interior design work.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks!

Mitch

Greetings again. I am a bit confused as to your referring in your
rating comment to a Mr. Spear. I had answered your query with three
other names and Mr. Spear seems to have been in a comment below added
by askjosh-ga. Did you believe you were rating his comment instead of
my answer? Also, I am curious if any of the three people I provided
in my answer proved able to meet your needs. If possible, please let
me know by posting a clarification here or by contacting the Google
Answers editors.

Mitch:

Thanks for your comment. I will alert the Google editors to it and
see if they are able to contact you regarding it. If you do have
problems with UI, please let them know that as well. They are open to
customer feedback as they want the site to run as smoothly as
possible. I hope one of my three choices works for you, and thanks
for the clarification.

Hi,

Yes please do forward my feedback. I have submitted feedback on
serveral issues and problems but have never received a response so I'm
not so sure anyone at Google is paying attention or cares about my
feedback. Anyway if it's possible for me to give you a better rating I
would be happy to revise it. I never intended to give you 1 star
because I didn't realize yours was my answer. I have not yet checked
out yours, but, I am happy to check them out, and give you a fair and
appropriate rating. I definitely don't think your response was 1 star
since these are at lest local people who are available to me.

Mitch

Dear Mitch:

I did forward your feedback to the editors and they will probably
contact you, though I'm not certain of their procedures.

I appreciate you reconsidering the rating but if it somehow can't be
altered in the system, I'm not concerned about it. My focus is to
find you your consultant! : ) I hope one of the three work for you.

Sorry, but I have to give this a 1-star rating. I called Mr Spear and
was advised that he charges $350/hour. He's in CT. To have him come to
my house in SF, I'd have to pay for his journey. He may be a great
practitioner, but there are many great practitioners around the world.
If I wanted to spend an infinite amount of money, I would just pay
someone to come over from Hong Kong or China. It would probably be
cheaper. I thought my question was quite specific about the person
being in the SF Bay Area as a criteria.

Your answer as follows:
According to the London Times Architectular Editor, Hugh Pearman,
William Spear is "THE Feng Shui man in the West"; According to the
curator of the Smithsonian Institute, William Spear is "The Leading
Auhority in the West".
William Spear's Book, Feng Shui Made Easy was noted by the New York
Times as "The Most User Friendly Book on the Subject".
Mr. Spear has been a leading teacher of Oriental Studies for more
than 30 Years, and has a Global Practice of Interior Design Consulting
and Feng Shui application with clients in The United Kingdom, Europe,
Africa, The Middle East, Australia, and North America. He has
consulted on projects ranging from the Restoration of a Frank Lloyd
Wright residence to the largest single private residences in London
and New York City. Mr. Spear trained and certified 32 Practitioners
in a professional training program over a period of 7 years. Included
in the program where architects, interior designers, and feng shui
practitioners with varying backrounds who maintain private practices
allover the world. I suggest you contact William Spear directly at
his office in Litchfield, Connecticut. He travels regulary to the
West coast to conduct seminars and private consultations.
He may be reached at his Office at 860.567.8801
I believe this is exactly what you are looking for; others previiously
mentioned, with the possible exception of Edgar Sung, have only
rudimentary feng shui credentials and experience, and none have the
interior design expertise you require.

Thanks, Josh, this sounds like what I'm looking for. I wasn't able to
find much about Mr. Spear on the web, but I'll give him a call and let
you know how it goes.

I hope it works out for you. Spear has many students, some of which
might be nearby, but if you want to deal directly with the "source", I
encourage you to call, he tends to work somewhat below the radar, (why
you cant find him online) but I am sure will be able to provide you
with impressive references if neccesary. His experience includes the
use of sustainable materials and ecological design principles under
the term "vital design".
Good Luck,
Let me know how it goes!

Hi,

Yes, I thought the "answer" was the one about Mr. Spear, and, I
thought that is what I was rating. Perhaps I made a mistake in
interpreting the UI here. I guess that wasn't the "answer" but it as a
comment? If so, I'm sorry. I find the UI on this product to be
*impossible* to understand. I can't figure out what's going on. I
don't even know what I am responding to know, but, I'm just typing
here because this was a "comment" button and seemed to be the only
place I would have an opportunity to respond to you.
