But I wonder how long I can stall them ~ Hi Steph and Capitaine, I think you are taking lessons from Guzzi. He has a habit of turning the question back on the asker. Thanks for your comment and asking. But I AM the asker of the paid question. Your comment does not fit my criteria of point form suggestion of expertise or interest from those of YOU I have asked to visit. Phil ~ hhmm .. wonder if that will do the trick. Was I too harsh on them? Nahh .. hmmm .. maybe. Bugger, I'm going to have to answer eventually. ~ p.s. I will approach your question in my "EXPANSION" post. ? Dear Silver One, Well you know where I am from,Melbourne Australia and you the same country but a different state perhaps. I am very much intersted in knowledge of the world and its poeple, and learning more and more generally, i.e general knowledge. My job is also a big interest as I generally work alone working on innovative ways to increase productivity, for my large corporate employer, (at a local level) whether by small new mechanical aids that I may design myself,or changing the work system/production line itself. My mind is around innovation, invention. I am somewhat of a loner, partly due to this preoccupation but certainly not anti-social as some seem to think loners are. JOHN FROM MELBOURNE |

greetings - Perhaps there should be separate question site for lurkers such as myself who listen in but tend not to speak up - are not quite virtual family (well maybe third cousins - twice removed). I am including my interests because I do have several questions that I intend to ask and perhaps my introduction here might be of aid/interset in the future. My interests and experiences: - parenting and grandparenting - construction and design (includig solar and sustainable/permacukture practices) - chess and problem analysis - sculpture - writing (poetry, short stories, play-formats) - practical spirituality (as opposed to organized religion) I have been appreciating the give and take on this site - thank you all. regards - synapse666b - country living |

Hi, Phil I confess ? I am another lurker, sounds better than ?voyeur?, don?t you think? I?m probably the oldest lurker in town! I?m not too hot on the computer but I struggle along. I live in the UK, in Sunny Eastbourne which is famous for its population of old codgers: I?m just one of many. I?m a retired teacher (English Lit) with three kids and lots of grandkiddies and even a great grandkiddy. I kid you not. My family keep me active but I also walk and swim; write, produce and direct plays; I sometimes tread the boards myself; I edit a magazine for oldies in our community; and I go on outings to the theatre and places of historic interest. Health not as good as I would like ? Got a dodgy knee, a legacy of my misspent youth on the rugby field. Mike |

Hi Mike, Thanks for your contribution. You are abviously a man of many talents. Look, I know the U.K. is a big place, but you wouldn't just happen to know of a friend of mine would you? His first name is Bryan (yep, with a Y) and he visits computer sites using the handle "Probonopublico". As you are near smack bang between Brighton and "The" Hastings I'm hoping that you might know him. You might catch him in your travels if you care to occasion in venture toward Slough, west of London. He will easily be noticed due to his constant sneezing, proliferation of multi-syllable words and usually armed with a $4 juice extractor and pest exterminator akin to the Ghost Busters type equipment. His postbox is full, yet the access door is rusting and now cobwebbed. His circle of friends are concerned for his well being. If you happen to cross his path, would you be so kind as to ask him a simple question on behalf of his many friends? Why? Phil |

My thanks to all contributors. Your efforts are greatly appreciated. I found it difficult to answer my own question. I now know who to refer to for further comment on future questions in similar interest. Norman, Laura and everyone, (Sounds like a good title for a movie!) ? Don't ya just hate those smiley face emoticons? I must thank the both of you in particular in conjunction with everyone else for your time and energy in contributing to my asking. To think that an unknown is happy to spend time discussing worldy matters with another unknown says a lot about humanity. OK, I will yabber on in my "expansion" question if that will satisfy any curiosities. I can only say that I am interested in thought; I have no expertise per se; I value ideas from looking at the same object/concept from different angles through differing points of reference and I have no points to prove. From this I learn, and hopefully I will become more tolerant and understanding of others around me. Just have a look at all of the contributions here so far. There are many talented people willing to contribute. As mentioned, my question even brought a few "lurkers' from the shadows. Your talent comes from experience. I hope to encourage the shy ones to speak up, without fear of being admonished by a "more learned" commentor. Unless of course, they are a ****head, then I too will also attack or ignore them as is appropriate. The usual time curve on this question is now waning as expected. Heaps at the front end, then dwindling away. That is the natural way of things, again as expected. It would appear that all is now finished, from those who choose to be a part of it. Future questions from me may now include reference to those of you who have nominated your interests. Thanks everyone. Your combined energy will be directed appropriately. Phil |

Isn?t it funny how Laura and Anne-Marie both don?t like men hiding things from women, it must be something in the female psyche - strange Norman. |

I must confess as tohaving shared at least one man in my life, although admittly he was not a great man as far as men go. I question my ablity to share a "great" man, but then the question remains on what makes him great and in what way would I share him. If he was a great minded man I would indeed be willing to share his knowledge with the world, if he was a great father I would share his love with my siblings, a great painter I would share his masterpiece, but I take it as in he is a great man whose body, heart, strength, and mind I would be required to share. A body being purely physical is easy to control, but why keep it locked away when it can give pleasure to others, strength often benefits all and is always needed in most any situation. And a good mind is a terrible thing to waste. But the love- the heart of- a man can not always be ensured. I must conclude that I would not want to share a man however great he may be, although I can not write in stone that I never would, if he was so great as to be that tempting to so many others- how could I tell my heart not to love him or be loved by him. As it is better to have "loved and lost", then should it not also be seen as being better to have "loved and shared"? Although I am filled with jeaolously at the thought of sharing something I would want as mine. |

Hi everyone, I wanted to address each and everyone of you. However, I have a dilemma. I don't know where to start as you all have afforded me so much time in responding with your rich and varied interests. You have caused me to think of so many other topics of interest from what you have offered that I have about 427 questions to ask of you now. The other dilemma is that I should probably pull my head in, as I keep reminding myself that this is not a chat site. (Yeah, I know I say that a lot, but this post could be deleted forever, or maybe Silver777 could be deleted forever if I continue to incite such good interaction as we seem to do collectively). Conversely, might this be a good thing for G**gle, to further the paid questions to their benefit, even if they are only asked for the obligatory 2 bucks? Any ideas people? Does G**gle have a "chat site" for long-winded two finger typists like me, thirsting for knowledge and deliberation (as opposed to argument) of thought? If not, how might one be created? Kind regards in appreciation of your responses, Phil |

Anne-Marie, Thanks so much for that. A pleasure to hear from you again also. You would have gathered by now that I am not computer savvy, nor overly interested in the intricacies of what might seem to others to be bleeding obvious when it comes to computers and internet sites. I still refer to my radio as my wireless. All .. Would any of you here be interested in a group reference point as Anne-Marie has pointed out? The benefit to all is that Silver777 for one might actually truncate his words here (eventually) and direct them in thought to a group reference. I think too that G**gle won't mind us referring one another (within these questions) to one of their own group sites created by a commentor. Surely this would meet the reference criteria, as it will be of a non-commercial nature. Pink .. would you care to comment here .. PLEASE! Sounds great to me. I will have a think about things such as the 18 year old limit and perhaps a general discussion site to encourage thought from those not quite 18 yet. The first thought that comes to mind is "BRAINSTORMING". Any other ideas for discussion people? Thanks again for your direction Anne-Marie. Please excuse my ignorance in not having thought to even look at "groups" before. Phil |

Keep me posted on what you are up to Phil. I don?t want to say this too loudly, certainly not in bold type, but I think Google take a view on these two buck questions with lots of comments. I don?t know if you caught it, but there was an advertising link embedded into a comment to one of your recent questions but it only lasted about three hours before the comment disappeared for good; however all of the other?s were left untouched. The only potential problem I can foresee with this 'Brainstorming' is that if it is an instant response site, then the likely contributors live across many time zones as you have seen in reply to your recent questions. Norman. |

Hi guys and girls, Anne-Marie .. Oops, I should have quoted "Brainstormings". No big deal. I'm just looking at other ways to share and formulate ideas without taking up space here. As Norman pointed out, this is a 2 buck question, so far unanswered. By the time I hit the send button, there will have been 48 comments to this thread. Norman .. I don't recall seeing an advertising link anywhere that I could recognise. Not sure how that would differ to referring a questioner to any other website, if that's what you mean. How do we tell the difference? Glad to see that the offending link was discriminated without killing an entire thread though. Yep, the timezones are one thing. But it's not a competition. I'm just thinking that if like-minded people wish to choose a topic, brainstorm it to death then move on to amother topic, someone might benefit. If it means helping someone out, having fun, expressing ideas without limitation and fear of being shouted down, then it's gotta be a good thing. Catch you lot again soon I hope. Phil |

okay Phil, thanks for explaining well, I'd say for 2 bucks we can have another 1000 comments... so could you english lot help me out with the choice of a word??? since I am writing an english brochure and cant find a proper description of what I am looking for. The word I found for "kaasplankje"in Dutch (a wooden plate with different pieces of dutch cheese on it) was "cheese beam". When I asked an english teacher if this description sound familiar to her, she told me it doesnt. What word(s) would you choose to describe a "kaasplankje", as is also served in some restaurants? And what is the right choice for goat cheese, since it is also written as goat's cheese? Anne-Marie |

Hi Anne-Marie, Happy to help. My Sister-in-law is Dutch. I managed only to count from 1 to 10 in Dutch, thanks to her help. I could never get over that guttural sound of the number 8. I seem to master it only by clearing my throat. Amyway, I think that you might be looking for one of the follwing two terms: Either "Cheese-platter" or "Cheese-board". I'm not sure about the hyphenation. If that hasn't helped, please say so. I'm happy to post a 2 dollar question on your behalf if you would like me to, provided that you have exhausted all other avenues in your research. If so, please recite your question here in comment and I will copy it verbatim for you. I don't want to place my interpretation on your question, as they have to be your words. I doubt that you will find an answer to your question at the end of my posted thread here. As for your goats. Either term seems acceptable. One is singular, the other is singular with ownership, not plural, but maybe a collective noun in your reference. Goat cheese and Goat's cheese still refers to the goat or the collection of goats. Cow milk, Cow's milk (from), Kangaroo meat, Kangaroo's meat (from) .. it's all the same to me. http://dictionary.reference.com/translate/text.html Enter "kaasplankje" in the above dictionary translator and you will find "cheese small plank" as the interpretation. This suggests a "cheese-board" to me. (Hence the "plank" bit). Phil |

Hiya Phil, Thanks for answering. Ill stick with goat cheese. No need to put in a 2 bucks question, but thanks anyway for your offer. What I found on that translation site was that if I enter kaasplank ( the "je" bit as in kaasplankje, makes it a small board) is that I get the translation "cheese beam" again. What I was looking for is which of these translations is actually used in english, cuz a dictionnary sometimes gives a choice that isnt really used in " the real english language", if you know what I mean. So, whenever you go to a restaurant again, would you be so kind to have a look at the menulist for me? Or dont they serve "chease beams" or "cheese small planks" down under? Anne-Marie |

Anne-Marie, Yeah, I know what you mean. That's why you have to include the "je" to get the full interpretation. Beam = plank = board .. depending on the usage. A timber beam is used in building construction; a timber plank might be used on a ship to discard dead bodies to the sharks, or for moving equipment on and off a truck or trailer; a board is a generic term, large or small including the above and also as a cheeseboard, washboard or boardwalk, but never a Company Board. Use "Cheeseboard" or "Cheese-board" in your brochure. I guess that you have to satisfy both Dutch and English speakers. Please check my usage of the hyphens. Also, you missed my kiss sent to you, in a purely platonic way of course. As you don't need my $2 question, your cost is now your kiss in return as below, indicated by the "X". Anne-Marie Go with 'cheese board', everybody understands that one. Things - cheese - seems to be a problem in translation. A Belgian guy once asked me what processed cheese was, since none of his English class could find any reference to it. When I told him it was 'smeer kaas' he said "I guessed it might be that but we still couldn't find it". Your question about cheese made from the milk of the goat is an interesting one. Goat cheese is not incorrect and everybody will understand it. Goat's cheese, is what you usually see and in the original form of the language (not any transatlantic version), means the cheese from one particular goat. In a similar way that 'the boy's coats'means all the coats from one particular boy. Gaots' cheese, to me is more correct since it means the cheese made from the milk of more than one goat in the way that 'the boys' coats' refer to the coats of many boys. This however is not what you usually see. It would be interesting if anyone skilled in English usage could provide a definitive answer on this one. Phil I have forgotten what that particular comment was but all I can remember was that it developed the thread and said, "for more information like this visit the link on this commercial site". When you list all Group sites, the list goes Boulder; Br*; Brasil. Nothing starting with brain- . Keep us all posted. Norman |

Norman, Thanks for thinking with me.....funny use of the language..processed cheese and "smeerkaas".........I would never have guessed it would be processed cheese in english, I guess I would have used something like "cheesespread" to describe smeerkaas. The dictionarry online uses the same translation I would have used when translating processed cheese. http://dictionary.reference.com/translate/text.html I will not refer to goat's cheese, given your grammatical explanations. Nobody in the world will trust the company when they state that all people will be served the cheese from one particular goat. (not to mention the stress the goat will have to go through when she's gotta produce these huge amounts of milk.............) Anne-Marie |

Hi, Phil. I live in northern California, but I lived the first half of my life in New England. I am an editor by profession, and my areas of expertise and/or interest include English in all its aspects (including literature, grammar, reading, writing, dictionaries, and history), linguistics, language in general, writing systems, and publications, with better-than-average exposure (but not what I'd call expertise) in art, philosophy, the social sciences, magic and religion (as equivalent expressions of belief systems), and classical music and opera. I am also rapidly gaining special knowledge about Western Europe in the 14th century. Phil, I think you meant "gold mine," not "minefield"! But maybe not... Archae0pteryx |

All, Please consider viewing: http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=481699 Tryx, I admire your command of the English language and your patience with my use of same. In fact I thought that "minefield" was appropriate. Some expressions of interest are mind-blowing. I note that you did not refer specifically to poetry. Bush poetry is of interest to me, with a handfull of attempts on my part over the years. Broadening my knowledge with correct usage of words and grammar would do wonders to enhanse future attempts when the poems arrive to me. If you have ever written poetry you will understand my previous sentence. Might we discuss "magic" separately to religion? Or is your magic related in a spiritual manner only? Consider the above for shared thought. I'm sure I have lots more to learn if you care to afford your experience there. Plenty of thoughts to discuss, but not here. Phil |

Hi, Phil, I am by no means excluding poetry. I simply consider that "literature" encompasses many genres, including novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and other writings. And I have done enough writing myself to understand your remark. Yes, using the right word and using it the way you mean it to be understood are important no matter what your style of verse may be. I think the best way to learn is to read good writing, and read and read and read, taking in as much as your head can hold. I could not recommend a better literary model than the King James Bible, all doctrinal matters aside. Learn the impeccable grammar of the Bible and never again be found wanting. In my opinion, magic and religion are two sides of the same coin, so I lumped them together. They are both belief systems by which one orders the universe and one's relation to it and in which the practitioner attempts by word and deed to influence powerful forces to act on his or her behalf. I don't see an important distinction between them; one man's magic is another man's religion. Thank you for the suggestion to join the brainstorming group. I am considering it but have not yet made up my mind. I am thinking that to work most comfortably it might need both a little more structure, meaning a few ground rules, and a little less, meaning a more open subject-matter format than problem-solving. I do appreciate what you're trying to do and commend you for taking the step of doing it. Tryx |

Hi Tryx, Thank you for your thoughtful and valuable comment. One of the many purposes in moving sideways by forming a group collective was to remove myself from this arena in respect of what it is. This has come about from realisation, not from any direct complaint mind you. GA is a "goldmine" thought exchange. No, the novelty has not worn off. It's not about that. As much as I continued to remind myself that it ain't no chat site, I continually fell into my own trap of using it as such. I'm sure you understand my dilemma in wanting to delve further into the interesting topics. I used it to the point of posing comment against my own beliefs on some occasions, for the purpose of drawing further comment. I think I owe it to all viewers, commentors, questioners and researchers to move over and take up my cyberspace elsewhere. You have made some salient points in regard to the group idea. I chose the track of "no rules" so as not to inhibit thought. I do agree with you though. I'm unsure how to provide the structure as you suggest whilst (is that still a word nowadays?) expanding our brainstormings beyong problem solving and still retain free expression of thought. I would be keen to see your contributions. Hey, it's no life long commitment Tryx. Just pay a visit if you wish. Please view my "Initial Post" which was my attempt to explain my intention of the group formation. I should have realised that literature includes poetry. It's a point of reference for me I guess which is separate, only because I place value on it as something I have done, like cryptic crosswords. Thanks to your suggestion of further reading, I must now add that to many of the other suggestions on other topics to fill my potential library. Thinking I may have to build another bookshelf! Your second paragraph in response is easy to read thanks to your proper flowing structure of words. However, I admit that I am treading in deep water as I attempt to comprehend the thoughts there. Again, this discussion may be better placed elsewhere. I'm always keen to learn. Thanks again for your diplomatic and kind response. Phil |

No expertise - once a little in banking - and zilch in math and stats as I have discovered. (What's discrete math? Is the other kind "indiscrete"?) Yeah, I like to play with the language, hang the consequences. Probably trying to fulfil(l) the Oxbridge definition of an educated person: one who can speak for five minutes on any subject (as long as it isn't math(s). That doesn?t say anything about the content, however Where from: Gulf Coast, New England, a guest for decades in California, but mainly in Germany. Oh, I was "down under" for a couple of years, know where Geelong is and how to pronounce Bondi and accent Canberra correctly, and could usually understand the natives, sang the songs: "Rocking, rolling riding..." "Once aJSM", Queensland melody; and read the poems: "There was movement at the station ..." "He had written me a letter..." Great discovering here more about you all.
