What is the history and origin of the Ski Trail difficulty signs and
symbols used in the US and Europe: green circle, blue rectangle and
black diamond? Who created them and when and where were they first
used? |

Howdy skitales-ga,
I currently have the year in which the symbols were designed, the year they
were modified to the current system, a probable state where they were first
used, and the organization(s) that probably designed them. I have sent an
email query to one organization (the other group is at a ski conference, go
figure) for any detailed information they can provide.

Hello denco-ga! Your message appears to be a "status" message rather
than a request for clarification. What do you need clarified? It
looks like you are getting a lot of good information for me. Thank
you. Is there any "who" info related to these symbols along with the
'when,' 'where' and 'what' details?

Howdy skitales-ga,
You are correct in that my message was more of a status report than anything
else. Just wanted you to know that work was being done on your question.
Since I am waiting on a response to my email, it might take some time before
I have any more than I have at this point.
It looks like the design process might have been done by "committee" than by
one person, but I am hoping my email will clarify that point as well.

denco-ga,
Thank you very much for keeping me informed of your progress. I was
amazed by how many official ski organizations, as well as ski
historical organizations I contacted that knew nothing or very little
about these symbols. That's when I turned to google. I'm going to
feel pretty smart when I get your info and I have a chance to email
the answer to all those "experts" who didn't know!! hee hee.

Howdy skitales-ga,
Although I have sent emails, made phone calls and left messages, I have
not had any response from the parties that might have the further details
that would fill in the picture. I will make a few calls early this week
and see if I can get a response. Appreciate your patience.
