Question ID: 471757
I am a South African national. My mother was born in the UK, my
father in South Africa (all of my grandparents were born in South
Africa as well). I know that the law in the UK regarding people in my
position getting UK passports was the following: If your mother was
born there, you could get a UK passport if you applied before you 18th
birthday, but if your father was born there (paternal link), you could
get a UK passport regardless of how old you are on application. Due
to this, I have been unable to get a UK passport, because my mother,
not my father was born there.

I have heard that the law has changed and that I could get a UK
passport based on my mother being born there, even though I am now
over 18 years.

Could you please confirm whether this is the case - and if possible
point me to the new law.

Thank you

Howdy brandan-ga,

It might help researchers to know if you were born before or after December
31, 1982, and in which province you were born.
