In Berkeley, Ca on Telegraph Road (what is now Claremont Ave.) at the
intersection where it meets Grizzly Peak and becomes Fish Ranch Road
there was a hotel called The Summit House. It operated from 1860 to
1903. Can you find a picture of it?

It might help that the Summit House was a stop on a telegraph cable
line which ran from Oakland to Walnut Creek and Martines (Contra Costa
County) and that a stage coach was used between Oakland and these two
destinations.

Later on a Tunnel was open thru the Claremont canyon, which was the
traveling pass. The tunnel is now known as the Caldecott Tunnel.
