Hello, Edna.
This is a pretty subjective question, so I can't tell you overall
whether this company is reputable. I can, however, show you the data I
found on Nationwide Contractors in North Carolina.
It appears that this might be a new business, in which case it would
be almost impossible to determine whether they are reputable or not.
In a nutshell, there are records of a "Nationwide Contractors" based
out of Texas and operating in North Carolina up until 1994, and then,
there are is a brand new Better Business Bureau file for "Nationwide
Contractors" in Charlotte, North Carolina as of last month. There are
no records online of an active business called "Nationwide
Contractors" in North Carolina right now, but if the company is really
that new, it's possible that there's some valid reason that they're
not showing up in the records yet, or it's also possible that their
legal business name is different.
The Better Business Bureau record for "Nationwide Contractors, Inc."
is here:
http://www.charlotte.bbb.org/commonreport.html?compid=90001530&national=Y
According to this page:
"This firm has recently come to this Bureau's attention. We are
attempting to develop information on this company.
The following data concerns complaints processed by the BBB since the
firm's file was opened in June 2002 or over the last 36 months,
whichever is less. Nationwide Contractors Inc. has had no complaints."
This simply shows that the BBB only began a record of Nationwide
Contractors last month, and that they either don't have any
information on them or haven't had a chance to process it.
Here is the result of a corporation search on "Nationwide Contractors"
at the North Carolina Secretary of State's website:
http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/Corporations/soskb/Corp.asp?4949540
According to this, the business was formed in 1986, and it is
incorporated in Texas. The registered agent for the company in North
Carolina has resigned.
Here is the result of the document search (click on "Document Filings"
at the top of the previous page):
http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/Corporations/soskb/Filings.asp?4949540
The last item in this list indicates that their Certificate of
Authority was revoked in 1994.
This certificate of authority is a license to do business within the
state. See this page:
http://www.bizfilings.com/learning/glossary.htm#sectC
"Certificate of Authority
Is a document issued by the proper state authority to a foreign
corporation granting the corporation the right to do business in that
state."
Because the company is based in Texas, I searched on their Texas
records. The Office of the Comptroller's website provides two listings
for businesses called "Nationwide Contractors," but one was founded in
2001, so I'm assuming that this one, founded in 1986 (the same date
listed on the North Carolina Secretary of State webpage) is the one
you're looking for:
http://ecpa.cpa.state.tx.us/coa/servlet/cpa.app.coa.CoaGetTp?Pg=tpid&Search_Nm=nationwide%20contractors%20&Button=search&Search_ID=17601858917
According to this, the company's status is "No standing designated."
Unfortunately, the Texas Secretary of State website requires a lengthy
subscription process and charges a fee for business inquiries, so
articles of incorporation and other official documents aren't
immediately available (and wouldn't be linkable, anyway).
However, I suspect that this business is unrelated to the one you're
interested in, so it's probably not worthwhile to pursue that avenue
much further.
If you would like, though, you can request a clarification and I will
pursue this further during business hours to determine whether or not
there is a record of a Nationwide Contractors registered with the
Secretary of State within the past month or so, but as it stands, this
is probably just a very new company with not enough of a business
history to judge their legitimacy.
I'm sorry that I wasn't able to come up with something as definitive
as a spotless service record or a list of fraud convictions, but it
appears that these guys probably don't have either yet.
Good luck,
Lisa.
