Hello ka2323,

With all the bad press lately about Vioxx and Celebrex, it's no
wonder people with arthritis are seeking alternative remedies!

It seems that many people do indeed find at least some relief from
Certo fruit pectin. It also appears that it does not work immediately,
but over a period of a week or two. However, most of the sites where
mention was made about this home remedy were sites selling supplements
or customer testimonials, and not reliable medical websites. I could
not find any scientific studies or medical support of this product,
other than Dr. Graedon?s comment below. Should you decide to try
Certo, it?s important not to overdo it ? more is not always better.
Use the dosages found on the Graedon site, further down in this
answer. It appears that Certo is safe, and not harmful, if taken in
recommended dosages.

When you visit your doctor, be sure to let s/he know that you are
taking Certo. It?s important for your doctor to know this when
prescribing other medicines.

The ?Placebo Effect? need mentioning here. Some doctors and
researchers believe Certo works to alleviate arthritis because the
consumer believes it will work. ?The placebo effect can fool people
into believing a treatment has true value. It has been proven that
when people believe strongly in a treatment their endorphins and
natural pain mediators are enhanced. Also, arthritis
characteristically has periods of flares and remissions. People may
attribute feeling better one of the alternative treatments when it is
truly due to a remission.?

The paragraph on the following site is from Dr. Joe Graedon?s column.
Dr. Graedon is a respected pharmacologist in the Duke Medical
Center-UNC Hospital community, having taught at Duke University.

And here is an excerpt from the actual newsletter:
?Certo and grape juice is another popular remedy for arthritis. One couple takes
two teaspoons Certo in three ounces of grape juice three times a day. They cut
back to one teaspoon in juice twice a day as the pain subsides. An alternate
recipe: 1 tablespoon Certo in 8 oz. of grape juice once daily. Certo,
used to make jams and jellies, is found with the canning supplies in
most supermarkets. It is a liquid containing pectin, potassium citrate
and citric acid. No scientific evidence indicates whether this or any
other pectin-containing product is truly helpful.
http://www.healthcentral.com/peoplespharmacy/pp_guides/PDF/HomeRemedies.pdf

?Thank you for sharing your experience with certo, a pectin containing
solution used for making jams and jellies. We have been flooded with
requests for the recipe: 2 teaspoons of Certo in 3 ounces of grape
juice three times a day. We also have heard from people who take 1
tablespoon of Certo in a full glass of grape juice just once a day. As
with most home remedies, the dose is not based in science and could be
adjusted."

?Eat Certo. Available in any supermarket, this pectin-containing
gelatin powder is very effective at reducing swelling in joints. It is
unclear, however, just why Certo relieves arthritis, but it is known
to. Each day, try to consume on tablespoon (mix it with apple juice or
another alkalizing fruit juice to form a soupy gelatin).?

?Many people swear by the effectiveness of an arthritis Certo
treatment, yet to date there have been no studies conducted on it to
prove its efficacy.?

?A friend, gave me this formula for arthritis relief. I have been
using it since Monday, June 9th., 1997. It has done wonders for me. I
was having excruciating pain in both shoulders and upper arms.?

?Pectin is an indigestible, soluble fiber which is present in apples,
citrus and other fruits. When added to a liquid, pectin becomes
gelatinous, which is why it is used in cooking as a thickening agent
in making jams and jellies. As a supplement, fruit pectin is available
as capsules and as powder.
Pectin acts as an antioxidant and may help maintain a healthy colonic
mucosa. It also appears to be helpful in removing cholesterol out of
the intestines and delaying glucose absorption. Although clinical
studies are lacking, its most popular health use is as a treatment for
arthritis. How it may work to help arthritis is unknown, though apples
are rich in malic acid, which appears to have some pain relieving
properties.?

?One reader mentioned constipation as a side effect, another described
mild indigestion, but -- by and large -- Certo therapy is free of
complications.
I have no direct, experience with this home remedy. Certo is
inexpensive, easily obtained and harmless, and nany readers have
testified to its effectiveness.
No one knows how it works, although one physician suggested that Certo
renders lead insoluble in the body, somehow affecting arthritis by
this reaction.
Regardless of its method of action, Certo appears to be a successful
alternative in the treatment of arthritis. I make no guarantee about
its efficacy, but if even one reader gets relief from Certo, this
column is worthwhile. To give you related information, I am sending
you a copy of my Health Report ?Understanding Osteoarthritis.? Other
readers who would like a copy should send a long, self-addressed,
stamped envelope and $2 to Newsletter, P.O. Box 167, Wickliffe, OH
44092-0167. Be sure to mention the title.?

?My wife and I tried your golden raisins and gin for arthritis, and we
were unimpressed. We have discovered something else, though. Take two
teaspoons of Certo dissolved in 3 ounces of grape juice. Do this three
times a day. We have been told to cut back to 1 teaspoon Certo in
grape juice twice a day after the joints quit aching.
We buy Certo in the grocery store near the canning jars. It's simple
and cheap and seems to be helping. I am on Coumadin, so I can't take
anti-inflammatory drugs like Advil or Aleve.?

?After two weeks of using Certo and grape juice as you described, my
feet are free of pain. Why isn't this remedy better studied and more
widely known??
http://arthritis.about.com/gi/dynamic/offsite.htm?zi=1/XJ&sdn=arthritis&zu=http://www.healthcentral.com/peoplespharmacy/PharmFullText.cfm?ID=42830&src=n56

?Many patients who suffered severe pain from various types of
arthritis were at the end of their ropes; traditional medicine,
including prescription drugs, had been ineffective in relieving their
discomfort. Therefore, as a last resort, they tried Certo ? and it
worked.
Although some folks added a tablespoonful (or a packet) to coffee, tea
or orange juice once or twice a day (with good results), most readers
indicated that they achieved maximum benefit by mixing one to three
tablespoons of Certo in a glass of unsweetened grape juice once or
twice a day. (The amount can be varied according to the severity of
symptoms.)
Within a week, most arthritis sufferers experienced significant relief
of pain. They then either reduced the dose or discontinued Certo
altogether until they had another flare-up of pain.?
