I am near to purchasing a powerbook but I have had friends who have
run into problems with dead and always on pixels. Is there any
merchant out there that has a 30-day return policy without a
restocking fee? Is there some other solution I should look into?
I live in NYC.

Hi,
Have you looked into Tekserve, located on 119 West 23rd Street?
Tekserve is well known for fixing macs in the NYC area and I doubt
they would sell defective powerbooks.

I've had my PowerBook 12" G4 for almost a year now, and I haven't had
a single problem with it. However, now that the iBooks have come out,
I would buy one of those for the following reasons:

* They're much cheaper.
* They are more or less the same in terms of power.
* They don't dent as easily (They're made of plastic, so they'll crack
if you drop them, but my PowerBook dented when it fell in it's laptop
case about 4 inches, and Apple says it'll cost $700 to fix it.)

Hope this helps!

I called tekserve and macmall. Macmall was evasive and refused to tell
me any sort of policy. Tekserve was nice but they still said I would
not be able to examine the computer before buying and that there would
be some sort of judgement call on their part about returning it. My
impression was that tekserve would make an effort to work with you...

I've done much of my computer business through MACMALL (I've bought
several G4 Powermacs, 2 iBook G4s and recently a Powerbook G4 for my
office, as well as a few flat panel displays). Upon purchasing the
display, I found the calibration was off and unfixible. If you call
MACMALL and talk with them, explain that the screen is defective and
they will pay for return shipping and no restocking fee. From the many
products I've bought from them with the flat displays, I've never had
a problem with dead/malfunctioning pixles. Also, they give away great
extras if you're willing to fill out the rebates. I would also
seriously consider the iBook G4, as someone had mentioned earlier. I
personally own one and like it as much, if not better than my old
powerbook.

Check out www.macmall.com. Just a note, I would order by phone for
sure. You'll get better service and you can sometimes talk them down a
little in the price.

I bought one from Apple and it has been fine. Thanks for everyone's help.
