I want to launch a new website up for my business, but I?m having some
problems. I want to create a website, where people can design their
own T-shirt, thus I need some kind of software where people can add
text, and pictures to a shirt. I need something very similar to what
www.customink.com or what artapart.com uses.
I first thought that this would be best done in Visual Basic, but
after asking a friend, he said that it would take about a month to
make, which is way over my budget. So the question is: What is the
best (fastest and cheapest) way to create this kind of software?
Should it be written in Java or Visual Basic? Maybe I can just buy it
somewhere? Or is it possible to just create a simpler solution in
Microsoft FrontPage?

It'd be easier if they designed their own offsite and gave you the
.jpg or photoshop document to reverse and print.

Well, if you want it running on the actual web site, you'd probobly
want a Java app or a Flash. Flash is a little more standard than java
because Flash is controlled completely by macromedia, where as MS and
Sun Microsystems both have their own java viurtual machines, that are
not identical. Cost wise, it really depends on the developer, and how
much detail you want in the program. For example, if you want the
program to have a 3d rendering of what the t-shirt will look like,
thats going to add to the development time and in turn will increase
the cost.

I wouldn't count on this sort of software being already availible, but
its a big world.

It's possible to do this in lots of different ways. The artapart page
seems to be using simple javascript for the front end. CustomInk is
using jsp with jaascript. If youre not a progammer, the
implementation should probobly be left up to whoever you choose to do
that.
