You might need to reinstall the program that is responsible for the c:\Program Files\Encompass\Browser.exe file. |

Broken registry entry, probably. If you're on Windows XP, Start -> Run -> Msconfig -> Startup tab and uncheck the offending application. |

Re comment from anotherbrian-ga: Program was pre-installed on computer and Encompass is said to be no longer in business. Re comment from sqylogin-ga: I use Windows 98. However, on running msconfig, there is no matching file. I believe that this might be an extension of a deleted program file. Nothing that I can think of works in finding it. |

Your windows systems tries to start a non-existing program. Obviously, the best solution is to stop the system from starting it up, but if you have no clue what module in your system tries to start browser.exe, you have a problem. What I would do is to copy a program that does nothing into a folder Encompass, and rename it to Browser.exe. I think there should be a program called nostub.exe or stub.exe in your windows-directory that does exactly that. |

The obvious check: see what there is in your program startup folders. You could also check the registry to see if there's something there. Either search for the string "C:\Progam Files\Encompass\Browser.exe" or look in the standard locations for startup files: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run It's even possible that it's being loaded in Win.ini, especially if it's an older application, so check there too (in your Windows folder). |
