I'm working on a research paper that deals with the military history of Great Britian from 1800 to the present which of course deals with the period of time where Britian reached the height of Empire and there was quite a lot going on militarily. Could anyone help me narrow this down a little bit? I mean... I'm not necessarily asking for a timeline (though I wouldn't complain either), but is anyone well versed enough on this topic that they could advise me towards which campaigns and battles and events were most relevent? Perhaps what new inventions landed on the scene that had substantial impacts? Obviously, WWI and WWII and the inventions accompanying those wars were both highly important, but what about the lesser known events that were nonetheless critical? Any ideas? Sorry about how low the price is, I'm trying to not get evicted. ^_~ College, you know. |

At risk of being pedantic, Britain did not have an Empire until rather late on. The Indian Mutiny (1857-8) was a major shock to the system - India was until then being run by a sort of 'Haliburton' Company According to this the 'Haliburton' Company was dissolved in 1858 http://www.britishempire.co.uk/timeline/19century.htm Here is something: IN the autumn of 1876 preparations were commenced for the "Imperial Assemblage," which it was announced by the Viceroy would be held at Delhi on the first day of January, 1877, for the purpose of proclaiming to the Queen's subjects throughout India the assumption by Her Majesty of the title of "Empress of India." To this assemblage Lord Lytton further announced that he proposed "to invite the governors, lieutenant-governors, and heads of administration from all parts of the Queen's Indian dominions, as well as the princes, chiefs, and nobles in whose persons the antiquity of the past is associated with the prosperity of the present, and who so worthily contribute to the splendor and stability of this great empire." http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/india/1877empressvictoria.html My personal view is that after the Indian Mutiny, Britain started concentrating on administration - rather than providing a rather peculiar hybrid service for ... essentially adventurers. |

I'd say that the most important inventions, in no particular order, were: 1: The Machine Gun & Heavy Artillery 2: The Internal Combustion Engine 3: The Submarine & the Torpedo 4: The Tank 5: Aircraft 6: Radio 7: Nuclear Weapons 8: Rockets 9: Electronic Surveillance 10: Chemical Weapons Okay ... So what have I missed? |

Arkera -- Probono has listed "electronic surveillance" and by that he obviously means "signals intelligence." The amount that has been published about the role of "Enigma" and code-breaking during World War II in the past 10 years is astounding, with the pioneering work done at Bletchley Park. Might I suggest a search of Amazon.com for books using the term: Enigma Seminal work on code-breaking was done at the time, work which continues today at places like the National Security Agency (NSA) in the U.S.: http://www.nsa.gov/home_html.cfm You truly have a broad subject area to cover, as there is no aspect of the military that was unchanged in 200 years. Kemlo What are you saying? The British developed the tank, the Rolls Royce aero engines and ASDIC and they (i.e. us) also invented the Cavity Magnetron which significantly advanced RADAR. |

I'll give you the cavity magnatron, a Great British Invention. But we have already had this disagreement about the tank Ref Question ID: 180675 and i've always regarded Sunbeam as a better aero-engine manufacturer |
