<Moving paintings in freezing temperature. Paintings are easily damaged if not maintained at the correct temperature. The frame, canvas, paint and varnish expand and contract at different rates when the temperature and humidity is varied. This can cause cracks in the paint or varnish. Acceptable temperature and humidity levels are as follows: Winter ? Temperature 65-70 degrees F. Relative Humidity 40%-45% Summer ? Temperature 70-75 degrees F. Relative Humidity 45-55% (Source: The Henry Ford Museum.) http://www.hfmgv.org/explore/artifacts/paint.asp#1b Ideally a professional mover should be used who has climate controlled vehicles. These services are offered by the following companies: Allied Van Lines http://www.alliedvan.com/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabid=69 Moveus.net http://www.moveus.net/antique.asp> <Search strategy:> <"oil paintings" storage> <://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD%2CGGLD%3A2004-31%2CGGLD%3Aen&q=%22oil+paintings%22+storage> <"fine art movers" climate-controlled> <://www.google.com/search?q=%22fine+art+movers%22++climate-controlled&hl=en&lr=&rls=GGLD,GGLD:2004-31,GGLD:en&start=10&sa=N> <Hope this helps.> |

by this "strange tip" about oil paintings I'd say it wouldnt do any harm.... Storing Oil Paint by Freezing It Water-Soluble Oil Painting Tip Your Guide, Marion Boddy-Evans From Marion Boddy-Evans, Your Guide to Painting. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! A tip to add to your oil painting knowledge I took some lessons from a lady who used styrofoam plates as palettes when painting and when she finished for the day she simply put another plate, of the same size of course, over it and taped it on the sides in a couple of places with masking tape and stuck it in the freezer. This might work for you if you are not mixing an enormous amount at a time. They work good as palettes since they do not absorb the oils in the paint and they are easily and quickly disposed of when you are finished with them and they are cheap!
