Question ID: 475176
We purchased a new electric cooktop. It requires a 220v line. We were
anyway doing cunstruction so all the walls were exposed. I pulled the
correct gauge wire (8) for the 40AMP req from the panel to the
kitchen. After covering and patching the walls etc. I noticed that I
bought 8 gauge 2 wire instead of 8 gauge 3 wire required by the
cooktop.
Whn I installed an oven, it had 3 wires comping out in addition to the
ground wire. The instrucrions were to combine the nutral with ground.
I wonder if I can do the same now with the cooktop to connect red to
red, black to black and white (nutrul) along with thground to ground ?

If I cant do this, is ther any oter sulution, can I connect the white
to another dedicated line coming from the box ?

I would reccomend aginst doing that. In a properly wired appliance the
neutral wire is the return path to ground for the electrity in the two
power wires. The ground wire is connected to the outer metal housing
and under normal circumstances caries no power. If there is a short
from the power wires to the outer housing, the ground wire will send
this electricty to ground. Thus preventing the housing from becomming
a shock hazzard.

If you do not use a seperate ground (as you should) and the device
shorts to the housing, you will recieve a nasty shock if you touch the
cooktop and happen to provide a better path to ground that the neutral
wire.

Without even checking, I am quite sure that this would not be up to code.

The latest code requires 4 wires to service panel from the cooktop
black(hot), red(hot), white(Neutral), and ground.
