The Pharcyde used part of Quincy Jones's version of "Summer in the City" in the background of "Passin' Me By." They also sampled Jimi Hendrix's "Are You Experienced." "JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE-- 'Are You Experienced?' 'Passin Me By', Pharcyde QUINCY JONES-- 'Summer in the City' 'Passin Me By', The Pharcyde" Psycho Jello: Sample This http://www.psycho-jello.com/samplethis.html "The Elusive 'Passing Me By' Sample... So if you're reading this you're familiar with the tasty organ sample that plays during this classic song... The sample is from a Quincy Jones song 'Summer In The City' on an out of print album called 'I Heard That'." Amazon: Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005A09L "What's also on here is Quincy Jones' cover of the Lovin' Spoonful's 'Summer In The City', the intro of which was sampled effectively in the Pharcyde's 'Passin' Me By'." John Book's Thrift Store Adventures http://www.john-book.com/thrift/2004/021004.htm Google Web Search: pharcyde "passin' me by" sample OR sampled ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=pharcyde+%22passin%27+me+by%22+sample+OR+sampled Google Web Search: pharcyde "passin' me by" "summer in the city" ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=pharcyde+%22passin%27+me+by%22+%22summer+in+the+city%22 I hope this is precisely what you need to know. If anything is unclear or incomplete, please request clarification; I'll be glad to offer further assistance before you rate my answer. Best regards, pinkfreud |

FYI: That same organ line was re-used by a Nightmares On Wax on two of their/his (it's a DJ) songs: "Les Nuits" and "Nights Interlude" Check it out, I actually prefer these usages of it to the Pharcyde version, but maybe that's because I'm into downtempo stuff with minimal lyrics. Just to avoid any hint of blaspheming, I will say that I was lucky enough to see the Pharcyde in 2002 and "Passin Me By" was, of course, one of the songs they did. |
