I am confident that I've found the quote you seek. This is from Ralph Waldo Emerson's essay "Self-Reliance": "I read the other day some verses written by an eminent painter which were original and not conventional. The soul always hears an admonition in such lines, let the subject be what it may. The sentiment they instil is of more value than any thought they may contain. To believe your own thought, to believe that what is true for you in your private heart is true for all men, that is genius. Speak your latent conviction, and it shall be the universal sense; for the inmost in due time becomes the outmost, and our first thought is rendered back to us by the trumpets of the Last Judgment." Emerson Central: Self-Reliance http://www.emersoncentral.com/selfreliance.htm "Self-Reliance" may be found on page 132 of "The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson" (Modern Library Classics): Amazon: The Essential Writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0679783229 The essay is also in these collections: On page 72 of "Self-Reliance: The Wisdom of Ralph Waldo Emerson as Inspiration for Daily Living," by RICHARD WHELAN: Amazon: Self-Reliance: The Wisdom of Ralph Waldo Emerson http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/051758512X On page 19 of "Self-Reliance and Other Essays" (Dover Thrift Editions) [UNABRIDGED]: Amazon: Self-Reliance and Other Essays http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0486277909 My Google search strategy: Google Web Search: emerson "the innermost OR inmost" "the outermost OR outmost" ://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=emerson+%22the+innermost+OR+inmost%22+%22the+outermost+OR+outmost%22 I hope this is precisely what you need. The 'freud' in my name is indeed a reference to Sigmund. I used to administer, score, and interpret aptitude tests and personality tests when I worked for a government agency. Some of my co-workers started calling me "Doc Freud." I am female, so the 'pink' helps to feminize the nickname. |
