The words "character of the enemy" is used in many different ways
regarding the context so please could you give us a more precise
context of the definitions that are you requesting.

Thank you.

really there need be no particular specification as to context.a
discussion of the question in the context of the legal aspect would
suffice.

fantasy100-ga,

Thanks for bringing your very interesting question to Google Answers.
I'd like to ask for a bit of clarification.

The concept of "the character of the enemy" goes back at least as far
as ancient Rome, was addressed by Immanuel Kant in the 1700's, and is
part of innumerable discussions of military history.

I'd be glad to give you some background and context for these historical ideas.

But I'm confused about what, exactly you're looking for. In addition
to asking about the meaning and use of "the character of the enemy",
you've also mentioned:

--it's specific use in international law (as far as I know, the phrase
itself is not embodied in any international law)

--the status of war combatants (a very separate topic from "character
of the enemy")

--how wars are terminated (again, a very separate topic).

Can you clarify for me your expectations here?

Do you want all of the above items included in an answer?

Are you sure you need an explicit connection between the "character of
the enemy" and "international law"? If so, what sort of connection?

Are there any other guidelines you can give me as to what sort of
answer would best meet your needs.

Any additional information you can provide would increase the odds of
receiving a well-targeted answer to your question.

Thanks,

pafalafa-ga

those other topics u mentioned are really different areas that also
need answers.they are not tied to the character of the enemy at
war.they are areas worthg discussing in their own rights.for
instance, after discussing the character of the enemy in war, i would
like a seperate discussion on the termination of war(modes of, and
effects of, etc.).the charcater of the enemy is just a subtopic like
the rest of them.

If I may make a suggestion, you may want to post several different
questions here at Google Answers, one for each question you would like
to have answered.

Researchers are wary of trying to answer multi-part questions --
especially when the parts are unrelated to each other -- since there's
a high likelihood of not being able to answer each question fully.

Just a suggestion...
