Question ID: 475509
When I put a CD in my CD-ROM system that is internal or use a USB
mini-pocket drive I can't open them. I get a "not accessible" error.
I have rebooted, turned my system completely off and unplugged it and
turned back on. I have run Norton Windoctor and Norton DiskDoctor. I
have tried a System Restore but when connect the drive to my computer
it makes a noise and shows it is there, I just can't open it. I get
the above error. help me.

Try this:

Go to Device Manager in Windows XP. In Device Manager, check if your
CD-ROM drive has a yellow exclamation point. If it does, it means
there is a problem. click on the device and delete it to uninstall it.
Reboot after that and see if it works. It could be a software glitch.

Otherwise, check your hardware. Make sure that the cables are securely
connected to the drive and to the board. Check again to see if it
works and you are now able to access the drive.

Kindly tell us the result.

There isn't a yellow exclamation point anywhere in the DEVICE MANAGER.
All my cables are tight. Any other suggestions?

at the very worse u fried part of your motherboard (unlikely, seeing
as though the computer still, well, computes), but it was probably
that u just accidentally loosened some wires. to fix this, follow
these basic directions:

1. unscrew and remove computer cover (after unplugging it, of course)
2. before you touch any chips, touch a grounded piece of bare,
unpainted metal. the computer case will do. you dont want any static,
so it's best if your on tile before u touch any chips.
3. jiggle the connections from your drives to the motherboard. take
them out and reinsert them.
4. close computer back up.

if that doesn't work, your gonna want to check the hardware status.
follow these steps:

1. click on start, then settings, then "control pannel".
2. click on "add new hardware". this may be different if u have a late
version of windows, but if u poke around (or tell it to give you the
classic view) you should be able to find it.
3. click next/yes till it gets to a list of drives that aren't
installed. if you dont see your cd/usb items on there, click "no, the
device is not on the list".
4. let windows search for a drive.
5. if the drives are there, bingo! install them.
6. if they aren't, wait for a researcher to help you out.

i'm no pro, but these are what i would do. no guarantees.

I did what you told me but nothing changed. It shows all devices
working properly in ADD HARDWARE section. Any other advice that may
be able to fix it?

There isn't a yellow exclamination point anywhere in the DEVICE
MANAGER. Anything else you suggest I try?
