Differences: 1) Method of trading "The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) provides the facilities for stock trading and rules under which trading takes place." "Thousands of stocks are traded electronically?using computers and telephones?on the NASDAQ" 2)Pricing stocks "Stock trading on the NYSE occurs auction-style: In each transaction, stock is sold to the highest bidder and bought for the lowest offer." "Continuously updated prices are carried on their computer screens, while they buy and sell over the telephone." 3) Types of companies on the exchange "The types of companies traded on the NYSE are the oldest, largest, and best-known companies" "NASDAQ lists 5,500 companies?from small, emerging firms to corporate giants like Microsoft, Apple Computer and Intel. Many of the NASDAQ listings in every size category are in technology, telecommunications, banking, retail and other growth sectors" --http://www.makingbreadmagazine.com/MainCats/ASKTHEEXPERT/answer4.htm (for the first 3 differences) 4) Ownership of the market "The Nasdaq exchange is a publicly traded corporation whose shares, like those of any public company, can be bought and sold by investors on an exchange" "the NYSE is not a public corporation. It is a private one owned by its private shareholders" http://www.investopedia.com/articles/basics/03/103103.asp 5) # of issues "Nasdaq Composite Index - A stock index containing ~ 5,100 issues" "New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) - The prominent stock exchange in the nation, with ~ 3,100 listed shares" http://www.wallstreetjovial.com/terms.cfm Similarities 1) Both the NYSE and the Nasdaq markets accommodate the major portion of all equities trading in North America" http://www.investopedia.com/articles/basics/03/103103.asp 2) Both regulated by the SEC |

diff #1 is either incomplete or wrong -- both NYSE and NASDAQ trade electronically. While NASDAQ is a pure electronic exchange, NYSE in addition has "specialists" -- speculators who can 'manually' trade. This should be changing because the 'specialists' are under very strict scrutiny by SEC for fraud. |

Distress -- The use of "specialists" in the old exchange systems, still used by the NYSE, is actually a core of the difference between the two exchanges. Financial research has shown that they have a unique monopoly position that makes being a market-maker very profitable. There are some excellent and detailed articles on these differences -- including many academic monographs -- and I'll cite just a couple: Investopedia "The Tales of Two Exchanges" (undated) http://www.investopedia.com/articles/basics/03/103103.asp "What is the difference between a Nasdaq market maker and a NYSE specialist?" (undated) http://www.investopedia.com/ask/answers/128.asp A good Google search strategy is: specialists NYSE NASDAQ Best regards, Omnivorous-GA |
