I am thinking of building a site that will provide information on
social and political issues (such as items on a ballot, capital
punishment, euthanasia, etc.) The idea of my site is to have
moderators for each topic that manage the description of the topics
and issues, and bring together respected well known organizations to
present their views in detailed point-by-point fashion on the issues.
I am wondering if there are other portals liks this allready in
existance. I know about Wikipedia, but can't find any others.
Specifically, I am looking for portals that :
1. Have a wide range of topics and issues
2. Offer objective descriptions about the topics and issues
3. Present the sides of the issues, authored and managed by the actual
organizations that represent those sides
4. Offer moderated discussions and high quality discourse on the issues
5. Cover both current events and long standing issues, social
political and otherwise |

It sounds like you're asking about sites like these:
http://www.meta-library.net/
Counterbalance Meta Library
The Meta Library is a shared collection of topics, definitions, audio
and video clips which cover the constructive interaction of science
ethics, philosophy and religion.
http://www.debatabase.org/alphaindex.asp
International Debate Education Association
The mission of IDEA is to offer students and teachers the opportunity
to examine issues affecting their lives and their communities; to
create broad and inclusive debate clubs that encourage participation
by all segments of the population, including ethnic minorities; and to
establish independent national debate associations to promote,
organize and sustain debate activities in each country.
Are these the sort of sites you have in mind...?

Here are a few others to consider as well:
http://www.vote.com/

A fully interactive site designed to give users a voice on important
public issues and other topics. When visitors vote on a topic listed
on the site, an immediate e-mail is sent to significant decision
makers like congressional representatives, senators, and the president
telling them how you feel.
http://www.penpress.org/
Public Education Network

international problems, including those in education, ecology, health,
employment, criminal justice, and national defense.

Yes and no. Yes... I would like to know about sites such as this
because there is a tangential relationship. However, here is what
these sites don't offer that I am looking for...
1. both ongoing issues and current issues / items we are voting on,
etc. The sites that you pointed appear only to address ongoing
issues. For example... nothing on the last California election.
2. Authorities representing major organizations posting their official
positions on the issues. These sites list the issues and the
"positions", but do not have representatives from the organizations
that would drive these decisions posting their official positions and
responding to comments.
Does that help ?
