I am trying to sell my car. In the last 6 years, i lived in three
states : Georgia, California and Virginia. Currently car's title is
from Georgia and registration is from virginia. When I lived in
california, car was registered there but the title was not transfered.
I recently approached the Virginia DMV to transfer the title to
virginia but they said it needs to be transfered first to california
and then to virginia. I am moving out of USA in 1 week so i don't
have time to deal with california and virginia dmvs. If I am selling
the car in Virginia, will it be a problem for the buyer to get a
Virginia title using my Georgia title? Will the virginia dmv request
the buyer to transfer the title to california first and then to
virginia based on car's history?

I want to know few used car buyers in virgina who buy the car and make
immediate payment.

How did they find out about the history?

They might,(but i doubt it -- the database to keep track of every car
in the U.S. to make sure that everyone reg. there car correctly with
the correct state and matching that up with the title and making sure
everything was correct - with no profit in it for the states -- it
would be very expensive)

Did you tell them the history? - What I'm getting at is, just walk in
and ask them to transfer the ownership to Virg. If it is currently
reg. there - transfering the title to the same state should not be a
problem. Is the reason you have not transferred the title is to avoid
the sales tax? Sales tax, I think, is only due when a sale is made.
Not when you transfer title state to state with the same owner.
Calif. then would not have lost any money.

Also, if you sell this to someone, they are going to take the current
title, from a different state, to the DMV (as if they purchased the
car out of state) - the new owner will pay the sales tax and get a new
title from the DMV. The DMV will take the title and send back it to
the state it came from. Calif. would never come into it.

I would not tell anyone about the history of the title and the places
you have lived. If you have clear ownership of the car (from some
state) -- then there would not be a problem.

Example, I live in NV. Let us say I go to Texas and purchase a car
there. I get a TX pinkslip. Signed over to me. I take the TX. title
to the local NV DMV and pay the sales tax and transfer the title to
me, in NV. The DMV takes the TX title makes sure it is filled out
correctly and then issues a new title.

By the way, the above is true. I purchased a car on EBay and went to
Texas to pick it up and got a TX title signed over to me.
