There is some squabbling in the fashion world over the matter of who
invented the miniskirt. Some give the credit to French designer André
Courrèges, and others cite English designer Mary Quant. Regardless of
who was first to introduce the miniskirt, it is reported that Mary
Quant chose the name "mini" for the skirt because she was fond of her
new Mini automobile.

"The Mini soon developed a style all its own and was the inspiration
behind the naming of the famed mini skirt by Sixties fashion designer
Mary Quant."

"It was a whole different story in swinging 1960s London, where the
MINI was all the rage. Owners included Paul McCartney, Peter Sellers,
Twiggy, royal family members - and fashion designer Mary Quant, who
named her 'mini skirt' after the MINI."

"In a brilliant marketing ploy, BMC put new Minis in the hands of
models, actors and other personalities who cruised the trendy London
nightspots where they were sure to attract attention. Soon the Mini
became the 'in' car for getting around crowded cities with limited
parking. Minis were bought by members of the Beatles, Peter Sellers,
Peter Ustinov, David Bowie, Mick Jagger, Princess Margaret and model
Twiggy. Fashion designer Mary Quant was so taken with the new car that
she was inspired to create the Mini Skirt."

"The original Mini was a British classic with 5.3 million sold and was

in the 1960s as a favorite of celebrities from the Beatles and David
Bowie to Peter Sellers and the Queen of England. The spunky little car
also inspired fashion designer Mary Quant to create her famed mini
skirt."

I would assume it came from the word minature a abbreviation of that.
I will look to see if I can find any more info.

Mary Quant, the fashion queen of Britain's swinging 1960s who has gone
down in the history books as the inventor of the mini-skirt, says
fashion today knows no rules.

Among its many distinctions, the Mini was the inspiration behind the
naming of the famed Mini skirt by 60's fashion designer Mary Quant,
from her Chelsea boutique, Bazaar.
