Looking for the author, title, publisher of a 1970's book on major
architectural structures of world religions, including the Angkor
Watt, Aya Sofia, St Peter's? etc, written by an (?) ex-jesuit.
Describes the meaning of the structures and effect on the visitor.

Hi frankl,
Is there anything else you remember about the book that you think may
help in the search?

The book (which I read somewhere around 1972-1973) describes around
eight (? maybe more) major cathedrals, mosques, temples etc. from the
main world religions. Although the descriptions do deal with the
architecture, the book is really about the impact these structures
have on people who visit or worship in them. Probably the book is now
out of print, since it was rather a niche product at the time. The
writer was I believe formerly a member (priest) in one of the Roman
Catholic orders. The publisher was probably in the USA, though I read
this in the UK. Possibly the area to research would be more sociology
of religion, philosphy etc, rather than architecture are such. My own
google (and Copernic) searches did not turn up anything promising yet.

Take a look at the "General Bibliography" listed here for the topic of
"Place and Space in Religious Studies, Theology, Spirituality":

http://pegasus.cc.ucf.edu/~janzb/place/religion.htm

and see if anything rings a bell. In particular, this one looks like
it might be a good fit:

Meurant, R. The Aesthetics of the Sacred: A Harmonic Geometry of
Consciousness and Philosophy of Sacred Architecture. Whangamat, New
Zealand: The Institute of Traditional Studies, 1989; Opoutere Press.

although the date of publication is later than you indicated.

Let me know what you think.

Is there any part of the title or part of the author's name you can remember?

Meurant seems to be heading in the right direction on topic, but is
not the author I am seeking. The link to "Place and Space ...." also
seems to be the right direction, but I have reviewed authors and book
titles there (and via links there too), unfortunately, without
success.

The book I am trying to find is probably related in some way to Mircea
Eliade and his concept of the numinous (building on Otto). But I am
sure that neither of these authors is the one I need (and write much
earlier).

I do not remember elements of the author name, book title, etc. And
despite extensive googling, following up promising leads, and reading
biblio lists, am no closer myself. I cannot give any additional
suggestions right now. So I regret to say this one may not be
resolvable. Thanks for the work done so far. A pity it has not yet led
to success.

I think it wise to withdraw the question and come back at a later date
if I have more information. But I will leave it open for the next 48
hours in case a solution presents itself.

I found three books - one is a children's book Caves to Cathedrals
by Carl E. Hiller, published by Little Brown in 1974. This is
probably not it.
Then, there is an academic "Congress" Sacred Space Meaning and Form
by Moshe Davidowitz and published by the United Church for Homeland
Ministries in 1976. I didn't think that this was likely either.

The best one was The House of God by Marion Geisinger, Intro by Martin
E. Marty. Published by A&W Publishers in 1979. It is illustrated
with some color illustrations. There is a copy for sale on Ebay
showing a beautiful cover which may jog your memory. I can't find
anything about the author Geisinger, but Martin E. Marty is a well
known theologian but not S.J according to his bio.
I hope this is the book you remember.
