How would I go about finding out the most common misspellings of the
word poker? I know that it is a relatively simple word to spell, but
I'm sure that in haste we are all prone to misspelling words,
especially when typing on the net. A response in a form similar to
that which is found on ://www.google.com/jobs/britney.html would
be the ideal response. But if you are not able to provide me with
something like that, just giving me information on how I could find
the answer to my question would also be helpful. Thanks.

Not quite as comprehensive as the famous (infamous?) Britney site, but
there is a search service that will return results such as:

Your search for poker generated the following misspelled words :
opker, pkoer, poekr, pokre, ppoker, oker, pker, poer, pokr, poke,
pocer, pocker, pokar, pokor

Would a link to that search site meet your needs as an answer to your question?

Hi. Well I definitely don't require a list as comprehensive as the
britney list! (I had no idea it was infamous, lol!) However, I'm not
simply looking for possible misspellings of the word.. Rather, I'd
like the misspellings of poker that are most frequently typed into
say... search engines, such as google! I'm just afraid that the link
you have in mind will give me "thought up" or computer generated
misspellings of the word! However, if you feel that the site will
answer my question, please share it with me. My emphasis is on
statistics rather than theory... if that makes any sense! Thanks.

I see your point.

Unfortunately, the spell checker (or should I say, misspell-checker)
is a black box...I don't know how it works, I just know where to find
it:

http://www.bargainchecker.com/

Have a look for yourself, and let me know what you think.

I checked out the link. In all honesty, the site doesn't answer my
question. The owner of that site has provided some random misspellings
of the word and offered to search the terms on ebay hoping that the
visitor will find what they're looking for. Most of the terms don't
even yield any poker related results.. instead I get mostly pokemon
related goods for sale! lol

It seems that the owner has simply put up that site so that he/she
will receive commission on all purchases the visitor makes on ebay
through his "bargain checker". I have to say, that's quite clever, and
since it's free, visitors have nothing to lose by using it. But it's
not like the owner has compiled a list of misspelled search entries..
the owner has simply provided the missplellings him/herself.

I hope you understand what I'm saying. The only site that I truly
trust is Google. Which is why I came to you guys in the first place!
Is there any possible way to get a list of misspellings, perhaps even
just the top 5, as entered into the google search engines? Perhaps the
Britney list was just a one time small project that Google undertook
and that there doesn't exist tools at Google that will cough up a
similar list on another word whenever you want! But if there is,
that's what I'm hoping to find! I appreciate the effort you're putting
in, and if it requires a lot more work to generate such a list, I
would be willing to compensate you by increasing the list price.
Thanks.

cblue-ga,

I understand exactly what you're asking, but I'm afraid I don't know
of any tool that will do it for you.

You could (with a lot of work) approach it from the bottom-up by using
repeated Google searches.

For instance, a Google search on [ pokre ] shows 10,800 hits:

"Results 1 - 100 of about 10,800 for pokre"

and even inquires:

"Did you mean: poker"

With repeated searches, you could find the "popularity", if you will,
of any misspelling you search on, according to the number of Google
hits.

Beyond that...I'm stuck!
