I have an old tower PC that has a Pentium II w MMX. I?m not sure what
kind of slot that it, but it appears to be the shape of a VHS tape ,
but smaller.

The fan for it is very noisy. Where can I get a replacement whisper
quiet fan to swap it out for?

Can you send me a link?

thanx in advnce

Yours is a a Slot 1 processor. There are 2 types. One is the whole
cartridge type with an encased heat sink and fan. The other type is
the SECC2 where the heatsink and fan are exposed.

I can point you to some possible sources but I can't guarantee you
that these replacement parts will be "whisper quiet". Just tell me if
you're interested.

It is noisy because of design. I need a whisper fan.

Is it noisy because of design, or is it just rattling? If the latter,
re-oiling cures for a good few months. Usual way to get access to the
spindle bearing is by peeling off the label. Lay it flat and apply a
couple of drops of light oil on the shaft. Let it sit for half an
hour, dab off excess oil, stick label back on and re-install.

I have the kind where the heatsink and fan are exposed. They are on a
spearte cartridge that is clampped into the CPU cartridge. I am
interested in replacing these with a whisper fan.

silentpcreview.com for quiet pc stuff.

I am actually building a completely quiet computer using and
underclocked VIA 1 Ghz processor on a slotket using a zalman heatsink
with copper fins.

I will not be using a fan as the VIA processors run cool. I have a
fanless power supply in a huge roomy tower case.

If the heatsink is not removable, you may have to switch to a similar processor.

I found that once I tried to remove the noise of one fan, I was never
satisfied and continue to search out quieter computers.

Welcome to the club.
