Hi robi1279!! Are you a publications or printer worker? I am one!! I work as a pressman in a Heidelberg Sunday M-3026 two-web press in Argentina. First the definition: Basis weight is the weight in pounds of 500 sheets of the paper's basic sheet size. The basic sheet size varies according to the type of paper, so to convert properly g/m^2 to basis weight we need to know which type of paper are we talking about. A general rule can be deduced as follows: Assume that the basic sheet size of the paper in inches is AxB, its basic weight is W, then the weigh of one sheet (w) in pounds is: w = W/500 pounds We can convert this to grams by multiplying it by 453.6 , then: w = 453.6*W/500 grams We have the surface S of the sheet in squared inches: S = A*B We can convert this to m^2 by multiplying it by 0.0006452 , then: S = A*B*0.0006452 m^2 Then the grammage (G) is: G = w[g]/S[m^2] = (453.6*W/500) / (A*B*0.00064516) [g/m^2] = G = 1406.16*[W/(A*B)] [g/m^2] Note that you can use equivalent weight tables to compare different types of paper and online calculators. The following pages have comprehensive tables to compare various types of paper and their equivalent weights: At International Paper site: "Content: - Calculations: ·Ream Weights ·How to Determine Pages per Inch ·M Weights ·Weight of Odd Number of Sheets ·Roll Weight ·Sheet Density ·Linear Footage in a Roll of Paper - Conversions: Learn the formula and use our on-line calculator to convert basis weights to grams per square meter. - Tables And Charts: ·Equivalent Weights: Learn the formula for converting basis weight from one basic standard size of paper to another. ·Paper Caliper Chart: Find out about the approximate caliper of a single sheet for papers of various grades and basis weights. ·Conversion Factors Chart: Find out the basis weight for various grades of paper." http://www.ippaper.com/calculations_conversions_home.html "Basis Weight and Grammage Conversion Tables": http://home.inter.net/eds/paper/grammage.html "Paper Weight - Conversion Chart": http://www.paper-paper.com/weight.html ---------------------------------------------------------- I hope that this helps you. Feel free to request for a clarification if you need it. Regards. livioflores-ga |
