The best source for such information is Jupiter Research, which is the
industry standard for tracking e-commerce trends. Their reports are
pricey. You can get an idea of what they publish at
http://www.jupiterresearch.com/bin/item.pl/browsedata.

Shop.org also has what you are looking for at
http://shop.org/research/SRO7/SRO7ExecSumm.asp. The report costs $595.
Or you can try this $1,295 report from eMarketer at
http://www.emarketer.com/Report.aspx?b2c_us_jul04.

I?ve used Jupiter?s data, and it?s worth every penny. More to the
point, it is difficult to collect comprehensive data on online sales,
and those who don?t put sufficient resources into it or lack expertise
are likely to come up with very bad data. If you?re serious about
using this for a business purpose, I recommend ponying up the cash for
a Jupiter report.

But if you?re looking for this information on the cheap, I?ve
assembled just three numbers for you. Please keep in mind that many of
the numbers represent estimates, and I do not have stats for every
industry. That information is tracked by only a few organizations, and
is closely guarded.

Travel $54 billion in 2004, about 23% of the travel market.
Apparel, accessories	$7.2 billion in 2004
Books $451.5 million, or about 12.7% of the total book market in 2003

Sources for the above stats include:

http://www.nytimes.com/2004/07/12/technology/12ecom.html?ex=1109480400&en=2f7daf7504713954&ei=5070&ei=5058&ex=1090209600?en=17ddc5140bf37f0f&partner=IWON&pagewanted=all&position=&oref=login

Quite frankly, I could have found more numbers, but I wouldn't feel
comfortable presenting them as an answer. I don't much trust the
numbers I listed above, if only because I can't verify the core data
from which they are taken.

I posted this as a clarification for two reasons: First, I was unable
to find enough reliable numbers to qualify as an answer. Second, I
wanted to warn you against depending on any data gathered anecdotally.
It?s not likely to be accurate.

The answer to your question effectively it depends on your motives.

Are you simply looking for a list of the top selling products, period?
Or do you plan on trying to sell these products yourself? If you plan
on profiting on the internet than you need to look at it from a
different angle.

To quote Marlon Sanders, "Whatever there buying, I'm selling". So your
question now becomes...

What "Market" can I satisfy in order to build a lucrative home business?

This is a question that you will find a much less ambiguous answer to.

You will not find a "one-size-fits-all" product that will sell itself,
so looking for a hot seller will be of little use, unless you can attract
the kind of targeted traffic that is willing to buy that particular product.

Start with what you know. What sort of products do you buy online? What
are your interests and hobbies? Is there a lot of other people spending
cash on these hobbies (i.e. is there a market)? These questions will give
you the answer your looking for.

My personal suggestion is to look into digital information products
because...

1. Operational logistics can be done completely online. You can sell,
package, and deliver your goods electronically and in a fraction of the
time it would take to deliver a physical product.

2. They are abundent. There are thousands of info products online that
you can grab the resell rights to, and start making money immediately.

3. Your sales system can be set up to run automatically, leaving more time
for you to deal with customer support.

These are just a few of the many reasons, but mainly becuase it is an easy
and profitable starting point to selling online. At a later point, as you
expand your business, you may want to begin selling offline as well as online
and effectively double your profits. The possiblities are endless.

If you need some ideas on where to start, or want to see some information
products that are selling well, check out http://www.ArtofHomeBusiness.com

wishing you success,
Mike
