A 12 year old wrote the above comment. Not being sarcastic or anything...

Try overstock.com, bestbuy.com, amazon.com, circuitcity.com

I still don't see why people want laptops to play games... buy a
crappy emachines or something. A 500 mhz is plenty sufficient to take
notes and run most all applications.

My whole family was outfitted with Dell Inspiron 5100 laptops a year
ago December. That means two adults and two young men, ages 17 and
20. For us, the parents, they came in at about $1250 net after
rebate. For the boys, we paid extra for the game-quality graphics and
the built-in wireless connection. All of us use the Dells differently
in connection with or parallel to our desktop computers, but one son
drives his hard with games every day and the other does serious
high-res work with his digital photography. Everyone has been
entirely satisfied and has had no troubles so far. I would feel
confident in recommending this model.

I was quoted $1060 for an excellent new laptop from Gateway --
wireless/DVD-RW/2.8GHz P4. Their customer service is unsurpassed as
well. They sent me replacement power supply for free when the original
one broke.

There is no definitive "best" laptop.

What is important is what YOU want to use the laptop for.

If you intend to use it for gaming, you will want a large GRAPHICS
CARD, plenty of RAM, and maybe a place to hook up a JOYSTICK, although
in my opinion, desktops are better for gaming.

If you intend to use it to work "on-the-go," You really do not need
all that much processor power; rather, you might want to focus on such
things as LONG BATTERY LIFE, LIGHT-WEIGHT, and WIRELESS-ENABLED. You
want "802.11b" wireless at the very least, and "802.11g" and
"bluetooh" don't hurt.

What I suggest doing is going to a local Circuit City, Fry's, Best
Buy, CompUSA, or similar store and looking at the laptops they have on
display. Find one that you like the looks and feel of, then check its
specifications.

For example, my laptop, I purchaced from IBM, since they come with the
track-point mice located in the center of the keyboard that you put
your finger on and physically move, instead of the touch-pads found on
most laptops nowadays.

Once you find one you like, take a look at the price and specs.
For $1000, you should not settle for any processor power (if it's an
INTEL, PENTIUM 3 OR 4) less than 1 gHz (Gigahertz). Anything less and
you're probably getting ripped off. (For gaming, go for the highest
processor speed you can afford). Note that while it is TRUE that you
do not need this much to just word process/work, computers are getting
so much faster that if you are buying new, it should not be possible
to buy one slower than 1 gHz. If you are buying used, this is often
the case and is OKAY, just understand you're buying a used, older
computer.

In terms of RAM, 128 MB is a good lower limit, with 256/512 being what
you'd want for gaming (more if possible)

Wireless is almost a must, with 802.11b a minimum and g/bluetooth a plus.

Keep in mind you often sacrifice speed and memory and raise cost to
slim it down, and the higher-speed laptops have shorter battery lives.

Also, do not be afraid to ask a store clerk at one of the
abovementioned places; most of the time they're knowledgeable and
willing to help you decide.

I'm not sure about the price but possibly the best performance that i
have seen is on a mac. I still use PC's most of the time because of my
work. However mac is something that's beatiful to come home to.

Instead of the Emachines that was suggested, check out the Compaq R4000.

Running about $1000 after discounts and comes with nice features.
