"In a preliminary trial,23 three people with liver cirrhosis and
esophageal varices (dilated veins in the esophagus that can rupture
and cause fatal bleeding) caused by hepatitis C received a combination
of Alpha lipoic acid (300 mg twice daily), silymarin (from milk
thistle; 300 mg three times daily), and selenium (selenomethionine;
200 mcg twice daily). After five to eight months of therapy that
included other ?supportive supplements,? such as vitamin C and B
vitamins, all three people had significant improvements in their liver
function and overall health."

First of all it must be noted that esophageal varices can be a life
threatening condition that could be fatal if not treated correctly.
Natural remedies should not be used to treat this condition.

As far as cirrhosis goes:
According to the Natural Standards Database the following supplements
are commonly used for liver disease:

Milk Thistle- This is graded class B which shows good scientific evidence

These are class C which show unclear or conflicting scientific evidence.

astragalus
clay
dandelions
Danshen
Eyebright

It must be noted that it is critical that you consult your physician
before taking any herbal supplement as they can interact with many
prescription medications as well as with many diseases states.
