The word 'render' can mean many different things in English, but is
typically not used in everyday speech.   It can mean:   to submit, to
present, to give, to change something into something else, to
translate, to represent in drawing or painting, to surrender.


However I believe 'rendir' is used commonly in everyday Spanish. But
similary it can mean many different things, making it hard for an
Spanish students to know what it typically, most commonly means.

Example:  'tell' in English can mean 'distinguish'
ex. I can't tell how far it is.

But this use of 'tell' is so remote (perhaps secondary or tertiary),
that it would be counter productive to present it to English novices.

I am definately a Spanish novice, and need to learn the typical use of
this very common word 'rendir'.

I am a native spanish speaker, so i am in a good position to answer your question:
There are two very differents meaniings of the spanish word RENDIR
that are used commonly.
The first meaning is, as eliteskills said, to surrender, to yield,
give up, or render. For example:
YO ME RINDO (I surrender - in the sense 'I accept the defeat'), etc.


The other meaning is related to the productivity and the good use of
the resources. In other words RENDIR also means to be productive (in
many senses: machines, financial, at work, also is used in relation to
good performances in sports, etc.).
For example:
When you want to talk about the good`performance or efficiency (and
also success) of a team (work or sport), player, worker, machine,
students, etc. You can say:
él/ella <the subject> RINDE buenos resultados (or directly "él/ella
<the subject> RINDE") o tiene un buen o gran RENDIMIENTO.
él/ella <the subject> RINDE malos resultados (or directly "él/ella
<the subject> NO RINDE") o tiene un mal RENDIMIENTO (for low or bad
performances).


The same use is for bonds, stocks and other issues related to finance
and bussines, in this situation the meaning is to be profitable:
Estos bonos RINDEN muy bien or tienen buen RENDIMIENTO (more common).


There are other common uses like "RENDIR CUENTAS A" (to report to):
Pedro le rinde cuentas a su jefe. (Pedro reports to his boss)

"RENDIR HOMENAJE" o "RENDIR TRIBUTO" (both expressions are synonymous):
(pay homaje or pay tribute)

Rendir means to surrender, to yield, give up, or render. It's used the
same in english. They use I surrender instead of the literal, "I give
up". Yo me <<conjugate form>>. I can't think of any other uses. I'm
pretty fluent at speaking. It's nothing a spanish novice should put
any stress over.
