How can I find a histogram showing how many people earn how much per
year in the UK?
Specifically, I am looking for a table which shows, for any given x,
how many people earn between x thousand and (x+1) thousand. So it's
just a list of figures:
How many people in the UK earn between £0 and £1,000.
How many people in the UK earn between £1 and £2,000.
etc., all the way up to the maximum salary of anyone in the UK.
By "earn" I mean gross taxable income per year, as we declare on our tax returns. |

I did a quick search and noticed the most relavent results give
figures in %'s of the population. Is this acceptable?

simontrumpet-ga,
Interesting question.
From my familiarity with income statistics on the other side of the
pond, I'd say it's unlikely that you would readily find such a fine
level of detail in the data -- most income data is reported in broad
categories, rather than in 1,000 pound increments.
Indeed, the closest I've come is a file showing UK household income
for 2003 income by decile. For instance, the 2.4 million households
in the lowest 10% of income earners in the UK have an average total
"original income" of £2,735, while the upper 10% earns £74,585.
Eight other decile categories are shown, along with total average
income for all 24.3 million households in the UK.
There are a great many types of income reported in the available
information. I'm not sure which one comes closest to gross taxable
income, but the categories available are listed below.
Let me know if I should post a link to the decile data (in table
format) as an answer to your question.

Hi, to clarify for you both:
Yes I will accept the results in %s of population, as long as the
whole population is given, so that I can convert it easily into
absolute numbers of people.
Yes I will accept slightly lower resolution - but I think deciles is
too coarse. I put the price of this question up a lot, because I
really want a good answer!
Finally, it is very important that I get figures of gross taxable income per year.
Hope this helps,
Simon.
