www.amfit.com makes a foot contour measuring system and mill to grind
custom footbeds, often used to create custom footbeds for skiers, and
by podiatrists to treat footpain.  I've heard there are competitive
systems, perhaps in Europe.  Does amfit have competitors, who are
they, how do competitive systems compare?

Health Canada conducted a study on all orthotics manufacturing and
assessment systems and only Amfit contact digitizing and standard run
of the mill plaster casting were approved as accurate enough to
receive their endorsement.  In terms of ease of use and time
efficiency there aren't many systems that can compare to the Amfit
system especially when you factor in the accuracy.  It is one of if
not the most distributed orthotics system worldwide.  Add to that the
autonomy it provides your clinic from a business standpoint, and the
fact that the system is portable I don't think there are better
systems.
