Go to the icon whcih you would like to change, right click, go to
properties, clcik change icon, clcik browse and find this path:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\SHELL32.dll all icons within this file are the
defualt icons of windows XP. This file address is the defualt path in
which the icons are.

If you are trying to use downloaded icons, I would suggest placing a
folder in windows named icons. Add all of your downloaded icons there.
Go to that folder and right click it, select change icon, and browse
to C:\WINDOWS\Icons\
(if that is where you have placed you custom icons). Select a file. Click ok.

If you selected an icon, but the changes are not visible, you may have
previously selected a picture instead. Navigate to the parent folder
of the icon that refuses to change and Views button and select icons
from that mini menu.

You can even create your own icons. Use the following guide for
information or what to do and what not to do when making icons.

Note that an icon creator is by no means neccisary.

Here is my quick summary to making them,
Open mspaint
Change attributes to 90 pixles by 90 pixles.
Create your picture here.
File save as
Enter name and make the ending (file type *.ico) ico. This makes the
picture you just made an icon. for example newpicture.ico
Save the file in a location that is easy ot get to. I suggest C:\WINDOWS\Icons\

I hope this helps. strickhj2005@gmail.com

What a modern day and age we live in. It is great to have a genius
just on the other side of my keyboard. Finally I can replace my boring
microsoft icons with real art work and pictures of my grandson. Bill
Gates is lacking in immagination. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP AND
IDEAS. At this rate I will start asking more and enjoying more. It is
so nice to ask someone with a real answer instead of asking a shade
tree expert.
Thanks again
