Question ID: 478054
Use a Mac, OS X.3.8, cannot make HTML links in MAIL even though Mail
Help says I can. Have tried copy/paste and drag/drop (always including
the HTPP://), but all I get is text.
Took this problem to local Mac store 'genius', but all he could find
to help was to open a new account and try it there to see if it was
system or Mail preferences. Find I can't open a new account and save
the old one at the same time, so no joy there.
I know someone else with the same problem, i.e. have just received an
email from another Mac user with a site reference that was only in text
with a grey line under it, that is, non-functional, so know this
problem is probably wide spread.
Any one help, please?

In the Mail preferences, viewing panel, ensure that the option to
display images and embedded HTML objects is selected.

Mac Forums says there is no way to do this until Safari 2.0 (which
does not exist yet, according to Apple Support). This is strange (or
nonsense) since the computer at the Apple store, as well as Mail
Help's instructions, do make links.

My Mail preferences, viewing panel is (of course) checked to display
images and embedded HTML objects.

Well, it beats me - it seems to work fine for me.

I just copied the URL of this thread from Safari's address bar and
pasted it into Mail and sent it to myself. When it arrived, there it
was as an active hyperlink.

(OSX 10.3.8, mail 1.3.9)

yes, I know. Mac Help says that will work. It doesn't for me . It also
worked for the 'genius' at apple store, BUT IT DOESN'T WORK ON MY
COMPUTER. I have a G4, OSX.3.8. I have also made a new account in Mail
preferences and tried again with it. Still no joy.
But thank you for your comment. I think it will require some strings
in Terminal which I am not up to.

Well - have you tried the usual things?
Fix permissions, dump preferences etc?

All the permissions are ok.
However, problem has been solved: I emailed someone with a copy-'paste
quote' and saw that a link might have been formed, so I included my
URL also as 'paste quote' and they wrote back to say a link had been
made. It's not really right, but will due for now. Many thanks for
your suggestions, tho.
