dolphhass-ga,
The firm of Clifford and Warnke was not acquired. It dissolved
towards the end of 1991 in the wake of the BCCI scandal.
The largest contingent of C&W lawyers and staff were acquired by
another DC law firm, Howrey & Simon.
The distribution of ex-C&W personnel -- as far as is publicly known --
is as follows:
Howrey & Simon: Paul Warnke; managing partner Harold D. Murry Jr;
John F. Kovin; John G. Calender; Philip H. Hecht; James C. Duff; along
with Associates Katherine D. McManus, Peder A. Garske and Dennis A.
Tosh
DC office of Hughes Hubbard & Reed: Robert Reznick
Mayer, Brown & Platt: Associate Kathryn A. Kusske
Spriggs & Hollingsworth: Charles J. Fromm
Former partner Bryan J. Yolles joined an unspecified advertising agency.
In January 1992, Altman formally established the law offices of Robert
A. Altman, with Clark Clifford as counsel.
The dissolution of C&W was important due to the ethical rules under
which lawyers practice. As noted by the Washington Post (12/3/91):
"Warnke and Murry spent their first day with Howrey & Simon traveling
to Australia to notify a longtime Clifford & Warnke client, the
Australian Meat & Livestock Corp., of their change....Lawyers operate
under ethical rules that say clients belong to the firm, rather than
the lawyer, and should not be solicited when a lawyer leaves. But when
firms break up, lawyers are permitted to tell clients they are
leaving..."
