Skabooty,
My first flippant thought was that you read too many comics as a kid
and developed a reflex to see stars and Xs or whatever when surprised.
But seriously, when it is very dark or with my eyes closed, when I
cross my eyes or suddenly look sharply left or right, with the eye(s)
looking towards the bridge of my nose I see a flash. Works almost all
the time with my right eye, less often with the left one. It is not
just a flash, it is a light ring or oval (dark center). For some
reason I identify it as looking like the way Donald Duck's eyes are
drawn (see above) but I haven't seen a comic book in a few decades.
Can you do this! Anybody else?
If everyone can, then it would seem that your large noise causes a
reflexive movement of the eyes (surprise, seeking the source of it or
seeking an avenue of escape?). I'm lucky to live where I am not
disturbed by sudden loud noises so I have no experience with that. I
suspect that if you are not awakened from deeper sleep by the noise,
this reflex (if it is one) does not occur, but we know that noises
can be incorporated into dreams or key them off (don't ask me for more
than personal evidence, and I can't cite an example at them moment).
I am intrigued with your question, since it seems to relate to
something I discovered a couple of years ago. Planning to ask my eye
doctor the next time I go for a check-up.
I would be very interested in yours and others' comments. Hands over
your eyes everybody and try it!
