It would be very helpful if you'd tell us where you encountered this
quote. As mentioned above, there is a similar quote in the Bible, "Ye
shall know them by their fruits." The Bible also says (of Jesus
Christ) "The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by
name."

I have gathered for you several references to phrases from old texts
that are similar to the one you have quoted.
