"We represent 200,000 businesses based in the UK [...]Membership of
the CBI is corporate: organisations and companies are members, not the
individuals nominated to represent them."

To get a better fix on this number I have spoken to their Press Office
and they said they would email me with a number. I shall let you know
as soon as I receive it.

The CBI Press Office have kindly provided the following information as
of 23 February. This is the best they have at the moment. I hope this
meets your needs.

"The CBI is the UK's leading business organisation, speaking for some
240,000 businesses that together employ around a third of the private
sector workforce.

Member companies, which decide all policy positions, include:       
 - 80 of the FTSE 100                                                
 - some 200,000 small and medium-size firms                          
 - more than 20,000 manufacturers                                    
 - over 150 sectoral associations."
