Hi jason_happy,
If I understand you correctly, my Netscape Composer does just what you
want it to do with no special instructions. In fact, I can't get it to
replicate what you are experiencing. Therefore, it must have something
to do with the way you are making the targets.
Please try this test:
Put your cursor at the top of the page.
Press the "Target" button in the Tool Bar.
Type TOP in the name field and click ok.
Put the cursor somewhere else in your document.
Press the "Insert Hyperlink" button in the Tool Bar.
In the Linked Text area enter "Go To Top."
Click once on the word "top" in the "Select a Named Target" box.
Click ok.
Now you should have the link, Go to Top, somewhere in your document.
Highlight / Cut / Paste and move the link. Hopefully, you'll have a
target "Go to Top" in the new location the way you want it.
More detailed directions are here. Scroll down to: "Click Here".

I hope this solves it for you. If not, or if you have any questions,
please post a clarification request *before* closing/rating my answer
and I'll be happy to reply.
Thank you,
hummer

No, that didn't solve the problem. I created the link exactly the way
you described, but it still did not work. My composer still added the
following code after cutting and pasting the link:
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Owner/Desktop/latest%20files/SS%20reports/silverstockreport56.html#top
I think the key to solving this is in the property settings somewhere.
I don't know what to change, or how to change it.
There are two ways to change the link closer to how I want it.
First, I can select Format: Link Properties. Then, I check the box
"url is relative to page location". But I don't want to have to do
that each time. Also, the problem there is that it changes it from
#top to silverstockreport56.html#top, which is still yet another
change!
The other way to change it is to select "Link" and check the same
box--or edit the link manually.
I don't want to have to change anything after copying and pasting the
internal page links. So, I assume that somewhere, in my settings, I
have selected some preference to make it do what it is doing.
Here is another possible work-a-round, that I don't want you to
suggest: putting in the full, correct, url such as:
http://www.silverstock.com/reports/silverstockreport56.html#top
But the problem with that "solution" is that the webpage will not work
properly when I post it to another domain name, such as
goldismoney.com, or silverstockreport2.com or any other mirror site.

I've downloaded Netscape 7.2, and this works a little better. Now,
when I copy and paste a link within the page, instead of adding in the
entire link starting with the root c://, it only adds in the page file
name such as "silverstockreport56.html#mgn", which is a minor change
from "#mgn".
It's a little less annoying, but still, something is up, and there
should be a way to fix this bug.

Hi jason_happy,
I'm sorry for the delay in responding, I've been out all day and have
just gotten back. Give me some time to have another look at this - I
promise to post back Saturday morning.

Here's a tip.
Perhaps it has to do with the document itself? It is located online at
http://www.silverstockreport.com/reports/silverstockreport55.htm
Try downloading a copy, and try editing it like I do. IE moving
around the company profile links by copying and pasting, and see if
your browser messes around with the copy.
See, I've been editing the same page for over a year, and there may be
some messed up code somewhere that entered the page...

Good morning, jason_happy,
Please open up a brand new document and perform the test again. After
you "Type TOP in the name field and click ok", press the Enter key
several times (or type a short paragraph) in order to "Put the cursor
somewhere else in your document".
Please let me know how that goes. If your test document works
properly, then it is not Composer.

OK, I tried creating an entirely new document from scratch. I put a
new target called "top" at the top. I tried making a link to the
anchor. No link! Yah! What??? Then, I saved the document, and it
would link. However, it still did the trick, and re-named the field
from #top to test.html#top

Hi jason_happy,
I've been looking at your webpage, and it could use some cleaning up.
Go to Doctor HTML and click on the "Single Page" button and run a
single page analysis. Make sure "Verify Hyperlinks" is checked.
"This feature will produce an immediate report on a single Web page.
To generate the report, you need to enter the URL of the Web page to
be tested. You may also select individual tests to perform, if you do
not want to run them all. A "Verbose" report will include information
about all of the items tested by Doctor HTML, with additional
explanations of any problems found. A "Standard" report will present
only errors, but will still have the longer commentary. An "Expert"
report will only list elements that might contain problems, with terse
error messages. When the form is complete, press the "Go!" button to
submit the form."

Hi again,
Ok, try it this way in your new doc (you can use your old target TOP
if it's still there):
Put your cursor at the top of the page.
Press the "Target" button in the Tool Bar.
Type TOP in the name field and click ok.
Click the Enter key about 6 time.
Type: Go to top
Highlight: Go to top
Press the "Link" button in the Tool Bar.
Move the popup box so you can see your typed text (Go to top)
Click once on the word TOP in the "Select a Named Target" box.
Click Apply.
At this point, what happens to your typed text?? It should become an
underlined link, with no added characters. If all is well, click
Close.
If that worked, it is because you weren't highlighting or typing the
"text to display". When I leave the "text to display" box empty, the
target in my document becomes "#top" instead of "Go to top". You can't
just place the cursor where you want to make the target, highlight the
text instead.
Fingers crossed!

Yes, that worked. But that's not the problem. I can CREATE links no
problem. Let me tell you more precisely what my problem is. Do what
you describe, but create 2 links; one to "top" and one to "bottom",
called "go to top" and "go to bottom". This way, you have two links
in the page.
Then, copy and paste the "go to top" link, and move one link below the
other. You may note that the process of copying and pasting, has
added some characters to the link. My link now says not "#top" but
rather, "test.html#top". This creates problems.
The reason this creates problems... is I have to re-order many of the
links within my silver stock report, by hand, each week. It's as if I
re-alphabetize them, by market cap, each week. How do I do this
process (time conusming as it is) without having to do all the extra
work of taking out the added html?

Jason_happy, what is troubling me is your "#top". You say that the
links are being created correctly, but if that were true, they
wouldn't read "#top". You should have two underlined lines, "Go to
top" & "Go to bottom". What I'd like to know is, when does your text
change from "go to top" to "#top"?
I have two links. They literally read "Go to top" and Go to bottom". I
can copy/paste and cut/paste, move them around, multiply them, and
they never change, they always look the same.
Do you ever have an underlined link which reads "Go to top" and if so,
when does it change to "#top"?

Ah, we are slowly getting to clarification.
The link text that the users read never changes. The link itself, that
the text is linking to, the url, changes.
IE, it always says "go to top" even after I cut and paste.
The problem is that instead of the text linking to "#top" it links to
"test.html#top", which is a different link.
